I think this deserves a post on TP, it's a video of a Russian man, Mikhail Sandovnikov creating spell-binding images with just sand and a potter's wheel.

Does make your eyes go funny if you stare at it for too long - and I wonder if his fingernails and fingerprints are all worn down.

PS: Just this minute noticed he has what looks like special tumblers on his fingers.

I think you'll find the thinking man's Spirograph is called...Spirograph, a cerebral game if ever there was one! ;)

I remember having something one Christmas where a pendulum swung over a bed of sand and made a pattern, it wasn't very good and the sand went everywhere. This is much better (y)

It started life very much as a kids toy, I had one many moons ago,
Maybe because my parents couldn't afford a potters wheel :D

I remember seeing Tony Hart doing a large scale version of that on his Vision On (Or Take Hart) programme.
 
We made a thing at school, can't remember the tech name, but it was a giant pedulum and a felt tip type pen drew patterns on a giant piece of paper. It was meant to be academically important because it was supposed to illustrate orbits and stuff but you could get really, really interesting and freaky patterns by giving the string a tweak!

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that, and yes it was a real PITA at times.
