Good morning,
I’ve just purchased a used Sony A9 for my upcoming safari holiday. Please can someone recommend what memory card I should get?
I’ve seen that I could need a UHS-II card, is this correct?

Second daft question; the camera has 2 card slots. Could I put a card with a faster upload speed in one slot and have the camera write raw files to that and then a slower card in the other slot and have the camera write the jpeg files to that card?
Thank you

good source of info...

Surprised it was 2 SD slots - thought one might be XQD/CF Express B, but no.

If you are doing safari, and with a 24MP, I don't think you need to get the highest performance UHS-II card, Lexar silver ones are quite reasonably priced now.... For the second slot, go for a high capacity one, 128 or 256 Gb, now quite cheap even for Sandisk Extreme Pro.

The one area where it seems some manufacturers were vague about a dual card setup was.......

Where if the slots were the same e.g. both UHS-II but if you put a UHS-II card in one slot & a UHS-I card in the other.......in the case of Canon dSLRs the read/write speeds were throttled to the speed of the slower card. What was not clear was how marked the effect was and how was it measured i.e. how anecdotal.

The devil is in the details.

Thank you for the replies. I’ve looked at the manual and there is no mention of UHS-II being necessary. I just trying to make sure I have the right cards for my holiday.
May I also ask peoples opinions on 3rd party batteries? I’d love to be able to get genuine Sony ones but they are so expensive.

I use Ex-Pro, Duracell and Hahnel 3rd party batteries and haven't had any problems BUT not in an A9.

For the price of them, id just buy two of the fastest SD cards you can get. Think I paid about £40 for two 128gb Scandisk extreme pros for my Fuji XT-5. For Saving a tenner or so I don't see why you would put slower or small capacity cards in, especially if your camera cost £1000s to start with. Gives you some flexibility for burst shooting, long exposures or video then.

I've used Hahnel batteries without a problem in my Fuji cameras. I switched to genuine Fuji batteries because I nearly always charge them in the camera and it seemed like there was a spate of people having problems with this party batteries expanding.

FWIW

I now only buy UHS-II grade cards.

My current choice of brand is ProGrade and capacity 64GB. Their UK distro is Amazon and I buy a couple when on offer. The most price was £55.99 each.

Edit ~ good price to performance

NB they sell quickly so IMO keep an eye out for them.

In regard to 'speed', I agree with others for burst shooting where the camera buffer can fill you need a good write speed and the aforementioned Prograde are rated at 250MB/s write and 300 read.

IIRC I have yet to hit the buffering point at 50fps shooting burst on my OM1 bodies.

PS
