Hiya guys

Turns out I'm going on a little city break..

So I've dragged out my old D7000 for the Mrs.

I need to buy some new/more memory cards.

I have a D810 so would me nice if I can work it to be able to use most in both.

My thinking is a Big 128Gb or larger CF card in the D810 for backup. Then using smaller 32Gb fast SD cards as the Primary. Kinda like SSD for use and a HDD for backup.

That way I can use the SD cards in the D7000 should I need it.

Any thoughts either way
 
In my Nikon D800 which is a similar camera I have a 32 GB CF card (60mb's) as the main shooting RAW and the backup is a 32GB SD card ( 90mb/s) in Jpeg fine. Ok you might choose a bigger faster cards. Why this setup? well I can go straight into the SD Jpeg fine card to have a quick look at the pictures, then pick out the ones I want to "work on" and grab them from the RAW card via picture number. Saves a lot of time having shot both cards in RAW .
I did a 12 day caribbean holiday with these sizes but 64 GB cards would have been better and my choice for the future

CF should give you the fastest speed whilst SD will be a little slower but cheaper than CF especially in big sizes.

Does anyone know the max write speed of the D810 of hand

My thinking is using a fast 128gb CF card as the backup that could in theory hold 4 32Gb SD's worth but I could also use the spare SD's in the D7000.

Anything 90Mb/s should be plenty fast enough I would have thought.....But knowing me I'll go for 160Mb/s

If you look at the link I posted it states the maximum write speed for each card tested. Looking on that link shows the D810 tops out around 100MB/s. The best CF came out at 99MB/s whilst the best SD came out at 72MB/s. The write speed difference between the 160MB/s and 120MB/s CF cards is huge at 96MB/s versus 54MB/s, whilst the 95MB/s SD card has a write speed of 72MB/s.

Having the fastest write speed probably isn't really going to be necessary for a city break as it's unlikely you are going to be shooting long continuous action where FPS is important.

If speed is important and cost isn't then my choice would have been Sandisk 160MB/s CF and Sandisk 95MB/s SD cards giving write speeds of 96MB/s and 72MB/s. If speed isnt so important then Sandisk 120MB/s CF and Sandisk 80MB/s with write speeds of 54MB/s and 49MB/s may be cheaper. I personally use Sandisk, I've never had a problem with them so always go with them. There are many faked out there, as long as you buy them from an authorised dealer there shouldn't be a problem.
