i could do with some advice on what camera to pick up. since using my colleges mamiya rb67 i really want to delve further into medium format, and whilst being able to borrow camera's from the college is good, i feel i want to pick one of my own up and really get the hang of it by using it constantly.

what are peoples opinions of bronica sq a's? they seem to go for a reasonable price on eBay, and seem to have a decent reputation?

any other models you would recommend?

Nothing wrong with Bronicas. I wanted to get a SQ myself a few years ago but couldn't afford it. Instead I got an ETRS which I could just afford.

I suppose that if I did get a SQ then I wouldn't have bought the RB67 a couple of years later.

Steve.

if money wasn't to restrictive and I wanted 6*45 I'd get a contax. If I wanted 6*6 I'd get a hassy and if I wanted 6*7, I'd get a mamiya.

That said I loved my SQ and I'd be thrilled to have it back again. Was only the cheaper SQB but still a really lovely camera to work with and great quality lenses.

I have a Bronica SQ-Ai and think it is great, cheap to buy and you can build up a fair bit of kit for not much money.

You have Pentax 67 too. Great lenses and not so expensive. I don't know if I can tell this here but I have one friend selling one good set here in Portugal.

I have a Mamiya 645 which I like. Not massively bigger than a 'normal' 35mm, same sort of format, lenses are a reasonable price and size. 15 shots on a role. Prism finders, including metered ones which give you aperture priority or full manual control. Only slight issue is 1/60 flas sync, although they do/did a leaf shutter lens which syncs at all speeds.

I have a Salyut C and had a Kiev 88 before, both are really nice russian hasselblads (but without the reliability) and massively cheap too so a good way in

but nice optically as well as cheap, I mean I will only change mine for a 500c and thats a lotta money

I've owed both an SQ-A and Ai and liked them both - the lenses and accessories available are of excellent quality, widely available and fairly cheap. I'd recommend getting the SQ speed grip for quick film winding and it also has a flash hot shoe if you're planning on using an on-board flash.

thanks for the help thus far guys, really appreciatd!

i was watching one on eBay that finished today, was debating whether to go for it or not. in the end i didn't, and it went for £205. think it came with the standard lens (67mm?) a back, filter, and a prism finder. kinda starting to regret letting it go!

where else bar eBay would you look for one?

Hi...what camera was that?

You can get a ETRS + 1 lens + prism finder for 180 ish from a dealer.

TJS

I do not know if it still in the for sale section but Fraggle101 had a full kit up for grabs awhile back with loads of extras and a few lenses.

I will have a look and see if I can find the thread for you.

Consider an SQ-B it is basically the same as the A but totally manual, hence cheaper and I am hoping more reliable. It’s nowhere near as robust as and RB/RZ but if its for personal use you should be OK.

I placed a wanted add and got mine unused in the box for £250. I think that a large number of B’s were sold off very cheaply at the end of the run and brought by people on impulse who never used them.

The B comes with an excellent f2.8 lens by the way.

just bought a sq a. £300, but it comes with an 80mm, 150mm, waist level finder, pistol grip and 2 120 backs. going to sell the 150mm, pistol grip, and one of the backs, which should hopefully bring the price down a good £100
