Well they are like chalk and cheese so it's not really a choice we can make.

If you are wanting to do some flash photography then a grip isn't going to be much use to you. Similarly, if you want to enlarge your camera body and increase the battery life then the flash will be a bad investment.

If you want both then personally I'd say you should get the flash because it will add something to your photography that you may not already have. If you don't have a grip then you can easily just change the battery when the first one runs out.

ye , very true about the flash , thanks, i mean how much difference does the grip really make anyway ?

with the kit lens not much, with a 300mm f/2.8 quite a bit, given the choice of those 2 i'd get the flash unless you intend to spend your lottery winnings on Nikon pro glass

Try (if you can) an extensive handling test of the D80 with the grip fitted - it's possible that you'll dislike it. Also, ask yourself how long you'll be keeping with the D80 - the grip's no good with any upgrade body (for this purpose, I'm regarding the D90 as a sidegrade rather than up) while the SB-600 can be used with almost all Nikon DSLRs to date, some film SLRs and even some of Nikon's Coolpix range.

The flash, without a doubt...and save up for a linkdelight grip off ebay, the quality is very good and less than half the price of a new one :)
