Maybe something worth bearing in mind when buying used lenses?

I’d imagine this is true for any lens that can be attached to a dock including Samyang?

Oh wow that’s some I never would have thought of

My tam g2 150-600 ( used from LCE ) had been reset ( or maybe the previous owner had not calibrated it or had a MILC ).

LCE were brilliant as always and let me take some test shots in the street ( at 600 and about 30 m I guess ) and I had time to dial in some AF fine tube offsets on my dslr so that I could check them that night against my G1 while LCE held the G2 on reserve.

This whole business of buying one of these lenses used that are susceptible to needing significant calibration offsets is difficult. I guess you usually have the time to reject a lens when you have tested it but its all a pita.

Thanks goodness for mirrorless -

though my G2 is fine on my D500 but it took anout 4 hours using Steve Perry’s method to sort it for shorter distances and all FLs.

I would have thought that would have been an obvious thing to do?

I've only ever bought one Sigma lens (150-600 with a dock) and the first thing I did was to reset it before I put it on my camera. I then discovered it worked well without any adjustment at the focal length (600) that I wanted it for.

Still, it's a good thing to point out for the benefit of those who would assume it would be OK. (y)

It’s something I’d not considered, but I’ve not bought a used 3rd party lens where you can make adjustments and maybe if I had done it might have been something I thought about but I’m not sure I would. Also, not everyone has the docks so really camera shops should be resetting them (y)

Before I dropped my D750 last year I had calibrated my Sigma 150-600 C lens using the dock. When I got the repaired camera back and knowing Nikon had replaced/reset the auto-focus sensor I tried the lens with the old settings still in place. Man, the focus was way off at all focal lengths and subject distances :(

After re-calibrating I was amazed at how different the required corrections were ... but it takes sharp images so it must be right, right? :giggle:
