Hi all

I don't post very often but today I finally managed to get round to setting up my brand new 300w Lencarta flash-head (I didn't buy the kit). Right now I'm into photographing glass, and this is my first pic using the strobe. I love the fast recharge times and modelling lamp. Have done other pics like this with speedlights and the process involves a lot of waiting for the flash to recharge.

Here's my first one. The light was bounced off the wall @ 1/16 power. No other lights were used. Any comments from other forum members interested in this kind of stuff, are very welcome.

Note that there was no real alcohol in the glass (why waste it?). Only water and red dye.

thx

Indeed, why waste the alcohol, but nothing to stop you drinking it after the shot! :D

It's simple and I like the stark contrast between the red dye and the white background. I'm not sure about the base though. There's nothing wrong with the reflection, but I'm not sure that the grey colour adds anything to the image. Maybe if it was white or black it might look more striking? Don't know. Lastly, I would have photoshopped out the reflection in the middle of the stem to create a more symmetrical look, but that's just me.

Good effort.

It's a nicely executed image, but I think a single colour background would be better - I find the line through the image distracting.

Yes, it's a nice shot. Always a problem with this type of shot trying to work out exactly where to place the camera - a lower viewpoint, exactly in line with the base would have produced a much cleaner, simpler image but you would have lost the 3rd dimension.

I agree, much as I hate doing anything in PP that can be done in camera, I would cut around the base etc to make all of the background white, and would clone out that unwanted reflection on the stem.

personally i dont like that look of that type of shot as the item would appear to be floating

not if you have some kind of small shadow or a reflection, to 'ground' the object.

edit: sorry, should have said, I also like the shot bit would agree with the background line issue and the reflection in the stem.

thx to all for the comments. It certainly seems that the base colour isn't doing anything for the image.

I wouldn't worry too much .... if you had posted the picture with the base colour neutralised you would have got the same (if not more) amount of comments saying that you should have used a different base colour.

FWIW, the only thing I find distracting is the reflection halfway up the stem. Others will like it though as it gives the stem some form.
