Anyone here on Mastodon?

Joined it today and wondered if any of you were on there as well. There are quite a few photographers on there that I'm thinking of following when I've whittled them down a bit.

I'm @ianp5a@mastodon.cloud. I've been on Mastodon since 2017. It's quite amazing the huge number of people who've joined us in the last few weeks.

For those that don't know, Mastodon is not a single site like Twitter, it's a network many different, independent networks, all connected together as one. Nobody controls it all. Join any of the thousands of providers, and share messages across the whole network.

I'm on, since earlier this year (when the Melon Tusk thing was first rumoured)... @carusb@photog.social . I'm liking it so far. There was/is quite a film photography group active on the twitters, and nearly as many on Mastodon. Only a couple of my bird-site friends have moved across completely though.
 
I first joined when Google announced the 'sunsetting' of G+. Spent quite a bit of time on there, lurking and reading mostly. Let it lapse because of lack of time, then forgot which server it was, and the login details. Some months ago I signed up afresh at mastodon.social and in May I moved to mstdn.social as I could see mastodon.social already starting to get big. And then on October 26th, or thereabouts, Twitter blew up and I was glad I'd moved. My instance, mstdn.social had enough problems with the influx, having to block signups, but was soon back to normal when the admin set up a sister server at mstdn.ai and people moved over from .social. Eventually, mastodon.social got back to normal, and the number of signups everywhere has started to slow down. The last figure I saw was 42,023 signups in the last week throughout the Fediverse, the majority of them almost certainly being Twitter migrants.

My main account is @garry@mstdn.social. I've followed everyone in previous posts except @Ricardodaforce who hasn't (yet) given us his username. :) Most of the photos I'm posting on Mastodon are the same street photos I post here, but I've started grabbing phone shots while I'm on walkabout and putting up a succession of those. They're mostly of reasonable quality, though I do occasionally take the opportunity to post images that are more, shall we say, 'creative'. I also curate articles on tech, science, medicine, health, environment, and related subjects. So only follow me if you want to see that sort of thing. I won't be offended if you don't. Mastodon isn't about followers, it's about quality sharing.

The filters work well. I'm beta testing the Mammoth app (from the guy who wrote Aviary for Twitter) and you can fine-tune the filters to, say, only affect your Home timeline but not the Public timelines. That way I can later skim the Local timeline for posts from people I follow, if they've mentioned Twitter. I'd like to have that level of granularity ("but not from people I follow") built in to the Mastodon code, but the developer has his own ideas as to how it should work. I'm grateful that app developers can add features.

But I agree. Too many people don't (or won't) use CWs for contentious subjects like Twitter, politics, sports, and even Wordle!

The Mammoth (for iOS only) app has more features than just about any other app and looks gorgeous on an OLED display. If you'd like to try it, google "TestFlight Mammoth". It's an easy two-step procedure.

EDIT: Just remembered that on Mastodon it's considered OK to Mute or Block people.

How do you block people in the Federated Timeline Garry?

Getting sick of seeing one lad showing pictures of naked men all the time and doesn't use content warnings.

In the web interface, click on their avatar icon or user name to bring up their Profile in the right hand pane (assuming you're using the Advanced Layout). Click on the three vertical dots to the right of the Follow button. Click either Mute @username or Block @username.

If you're using the official Mastodon app, click the avatar, then click the ... icon at the top right.

If you're using any other app, most of them put the Mute and Block options in a similar place.

This blocks or mutes them on all timelines. I don't know any way of doing this on just the Federated timeline.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve just created a filter for the word “Twitter”. I’ll never see posts about it again.

You could add "Birdsite" and "Musk" to the same filter. People are also using "Elmo" to refer to Musk, but if you filter that you might miss out on Sesame Street gossip. :)
