Hi All, Saw a clip of a fashion shoot on the TV, the tog had what looked like a Canon 1D with a prime lens, it looked like the lens had masking tape across the top and bottom of the lens glass... Never seen this done before, just wondered why this would be? Would this be to give panoramic pics?

Hi Simon

If it was Country House Rescue you were watching, they did have a square filter gaffer taped to the front of the lens. This sort of thing is not unusual on a pro shoot, but ironically not often done by amateurs, as it is thought to look not very professional!

The very same - thanks Sam!
Can I just ask - what is a square filter exactly, if it's to crop the image square, why isn't this done in post-production?

Nothing to do with cropping.

Filters, square/rectangular or round screw-in, are to add an effect.

The most common use of rectangular filters is with grads - graduated filters that are darker at the top and used to darken a bright sky in landscapes. They can be slid up and down in the holder to position the grad line with the horizon. But there are dozens of different sorts.

Check out Cokin and Lee filters.
