I'm 37. Used to do kickboxing as a teenager for about 6-7 years. Then had A-levels and university and never trained again. More recently I've been lifting weights and trying to lose more body fat. As I've become a bit fitter, I feel the need to be more active. I'm considering self-defence classes but have sod all idea of what to choose. I know my recovery rate will be slower and I'll probably be more prone to injury.

Is there a suitable martial art that I could take up and carry on in my 40s and 50s?
What should I look out for when choosing a particular school?

You could try origami that should see you through to your 80's ( sorry )

Dont laugh but Yoga takes some beating for getting fit.

I took up Aikido in my early 30's for a couple of years (after doing karate for a couple of years as a teenager).

Was OK but Im knackered and fat too. It's much more gentle on those who have a better level of fitness.

I took up Tai Chi in my <cough> late 40s. I'm now 50 and have just come back from an intensive workshop (8 hours a day sort of thing). It is very much designed to be practised until very late in life.

Also, we get weapons ;)
