I have just got round to downloading around 300 frames I took over august/september and have noticed that on all the frames where the background is light there is a black mark in the same place on every one.

There doesnt seem to have been anything on the lens as it has been wiped since the first frames were taken. Although i've been able to retouch using adobe photoshop it is still occuring on new frames where i have made sure the lens is clean.

In fact tinking about it this is since new as I have only had the camera since august and this is the first time I have seen the pictures on a computer screen as opposed to the LCD screen.

Any advice welcome! :'(

dust on your sensor. take the lens off, put the camera in sensor cleaning mode, hold it up, lens mount down and try giving it a blast with a rocket blower. that should dislodge it.

yup sounds about right
bet it's most visible at high aperture numbers, but not when wide open

wanna show a sample?

yep. Dust.

Plenty of threads on here about cleaning. Have a look in the tutorials section there are at least 2. Copperhil and "arctic butterfly"

Thanks for the quick replies! I did consider maybe dust on the sensor but thought as my camera was brand new that it was going to be unlikely (I should add that i'm a total beginner though:))

I can post a picture of it as soon as I can work out how! Whats the maximum size file I can post - think they're all around 1.5 MB so might have to work out how to resize them in photoshop.

regret to inform you that brand new does not necessarily mean clean

what camera is it btw?

It's a Nikon D40, 18-55mm lens.

Hopefully an image should be around here somewhere so you can see the problem!
