I use a Nikon D90 coupled with a 16-85 Nikkor lens fitted with a Nikon HB-39 lens hood. I have noticed when I use the camera in the upright position, if that is the corrct terminology, and use the built in flash, I get a small half round mark on the image, as is something is in the way, I am assuming it is the lens hood that is causing the problem as when I turn the camera around I get the same mark on the other side, and when I try with the hood off, it isn't there, so obviously that seems to be the problem. Anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? I could have understood it if I had been using a non-Nikon hood.

If you get it with the hood on in the edges, then yes. I get it with my 18-70 with the hood on..

Its not the actual hood, just the shadow of it, remove the hood when using the pop up flash.

Get this with the D800 - removing the hood solves it.

Have a look in your user manual...

Page 232 says something like...:
The flash may be unable to light the entire subject with the 16-85mm lens at ranges less than 2.0 m/6 ft. 7 in. ...

Am I the only one loving to read manuals? And I don't even have the D90?! :D

Thanks everybody,
I guess I should have read the manual first.
Cheers,
Ken

I guess I should have read the manual first.
But then this thread wouldn't exist! :)
Others searching for an answer will now find, that the manual has some valuable info re. lenses, focal lengths and distance to subject, when using on-camera flash.

And I wouldn't have the pleasure of demonstrating my nerdy "read-the-manual-forward-and-backward" tendency! :D
