Just when you thought Adobe couldn't be more controlling in collecting revenue they have now stopped supporting location/Geo tagging of photos. Well, you can still tag images but the map feature is no longer available.

I thought this was linked to google maps - maybe it is, but the 'procedure calls' at Adobe's end looks like they've changed.

Adobe abandons maps in LR v4 and v5

Great.... :(

Presumably the map functionality is present in their late whizz-bang version(s).

Before you all slate Adobe, this won’t have anything to do with Adobe.
Google are changing and updating their APIs all the time so it’s more than likely that the old LR is just no longer compatible with new Google updates.

Google have made some changes recently (they have started charging if you embed maps on your web site and receive over a certain number of hits) so it's possible they made other changes at the same time that has broken this feature. Having said that I'm not sure why Lr6 still works - it hasn't received any patches recently and isn't going to receive anymore so I guess it's a matter of time before that stops working as well.

I've never actually used this feature in Lr as my camera doesn't have GPS and I disabled the module so forgot it was there!

But it is... they won't fix it. Ok, they have a right not to support earlier versions but, they could fix it if they had the desire!

You don't need a camera with GPS to use this.... Garmin (others are available) trekker files (.gpx) can be embedded. You can/could even manually tag your images..

Why should they? LR4 and 5 are old versions. Just like any other software company in the world, they are not going to support old versions.
If it bothers you so much buy an upgrade.

I did! Ages ago - there are reasons I still use an earlier version - principally, Adobe only allow 2 instances per subscription!

I was just responding to your statement that the problem is not with Adobe.... and I did say "they have a right not to support it"

Ok but you stated:
"Just when you thought Adobe couldn't be more controlling in collecting revenue they have now stopped supporting location/Geo tagging of photos"

Which is incorrect. They are not doing it for revenue reasons, rather they link to a map which API calls have changed and they are not supporting old versions of the software which is completely understandable. They do offer this support in version 6.

But why should they, just because you are inconvenienced? How many old versions of software should they support, or should they put their effort into support of the current version and putting features into newer versions?

But it's not Adobe's problem. It's Google that changed their software, not Adobe. It has nothing to do with controlling you or collecting money.
You can still edit your images, yes?

Unfortunately in this day and age you need to upgrade to keep up with new, modern technology, especially where some services are provided by a third party.

And I agree with you.- but, not withstanding (and call me a cynic), just when did Adobe not do something for revenue reasons?

Please note ---- I DO have a CC subscription!

just two at any one time.

Yeah, I know..... three would be brilliant ;)

One my Working Desktop, one for Mrs. Chuckles and then this laptop!

For geotagging, DigiKam does that well. Supporting GPS tracks, auto correlation, reverse geocoding, with full in-map-browsing, and batch processing. And It's free and open source. So you can easily give it a try.

Thanks - I'll give it a try

But do you work on your desktop and laptop at the same time?
If not then you just need to log out of one and login to the other.

Yes, strangely enough, though not exactly the same time (enough to be a nuisance) - two different workflows

That message is coming up on CC 7.4 also but when you go to the site it just mentions LR 4 & 5

It’s been confirmed that it doesn’t affect 7.4 and the message was coming up in error.

It caused a lot of problems for me initially as I haven’t used Lightroom for a few months due to not being able to get out and take pictures, etc but when I opened the latest updated version a tips box came up talking me how to use the map module (which I use all the time) and then LR would freeze.

What was happening was the window stating maps was going to no longer be supported was hiding behind it waiting for me to click ok. Took me ages to notice it, there was a tiny thin grey line above the tips box that I eventually realised about and was able to drag it up.

Not sure if any one else will have the same issue but this may help.

I asked Adobe, they said there may be a updated LR Classic hopefully around that time Maps stop working in earlier versions. Was told to "watch this space"! In other words, keep watching Adobe's website for updates.

No idea if updated version going to still work with Windows 7 or if it will fix the problems with Map.
