My mini spending spree in continuing as I have caught the wife on a good couple of days!:LOL:

I am looking for a manfrotto tripod to use with my D80, ideally less than £100.

I have only ever used cheap tripods before (£10 jobbys!), any suggestions on Models and cheapest place to get one?

As always your help is much appreciated:)

Thanks in advance,

If it must be a Manfrotto, you can't go wrong with a 190 x pro b, but it won't come with a head, in which case something like a 804 RC2 at about £50 would do the job. Not ideal for wildlife, but if you're doing landscapes or portraits etc, the it'd be ok.

Redsnapper tripods and heads also seem to get very good reviews here and you'd qualify for 10% discount as well

Either the 190xProB or the sturdier, but heavier 055 ProB/xProB will do the job nicely. Morrisphoto are usually the cheapest for Manfrotto, but Ffordes have some ex-demo stuff going cheap at the moment (might not be much left though)

I just bought a used as new Manfrotto head ( 804 RC2) and a new Red Snapper tripod.
With postage, the lot cost me less than £100.

The head is superb and the tripod is sturdy, very well made and half the price of its Manfrotto equivalent.
I can thoroughly recommend Red Snapper, ordered Thursday pm and came this morning ( Friday)

Was that direct from Red Snapper? Do all Manfrotta heads fit?

There are actually two different threads - 3/8" and 1/4". The Manfrotto tripods have both, the 3/8" being a push-down fit over the 1/4" fitment.

Has anybody used the Red Snapper ball heads, if so what do you think to them? Do they come with a quick release plate, or is this seperate? I am very tempted by one of these, have had a look on the website and was very impressed especially for the price:)

Edit: Just recieved a email from Joe at Red Snapper comfirning that the ball head does come with a release plate......so I have ordered one & the tripod:D

Manfrotto are doing a promo at the moment, their 190CX is £99 with a head. Good legs..

Any more details on this, can't find any info about it ?

Cheers

Good choice. I was going to get the Manfrotto 190xprob, but it looked quite short for me (5`11") The Redsnapper is at the perfect height for me with the legs fully extended and the centre column down.
Solid as a rock too and very well made.
And, they are nice people to deal with. Phoned up to place the order and a few minutes later Joe rang me back to take it. Will probably get a ball head soon from them.

The tripod and head arrived yesterday and I am over the moon with them:thumbs:

Both are brilliant bits of kit and for the money I dont think I could find better anywhere!
I took a few snapshots in the house, and I cant believe the difference when using a good tripod......it makes the job so much easier, no more camera shake when I tilt the head:D

Looking forward to taking it out for a few test shots this weekend:clap:

A big thumbs up to Red Snapper:thumbs:

Joe`s stuff is good value for money and decent quality as well.........

If you want to stay within your budget try Redsnapper, if you can stretch a Manfrotto 190XPROB + 804RC2 cost me ~£130 and is excellent, will last me years.

I have a 16 year old 055 and it is absolutely the best money I ever spent on camera gear. It has longer legs than the 190 which is unbelievably useful in the field.

I also have a carbon fibre manfrotto 190MF4 which I am taking to Spain later today as it is lighter and will fit in my suitcase without adding excess weight. I will miss the 055 though I KNOW!

I'm after a new tripod. I want something that I'll never want to upgrade. The Redsnappers are clearly popular, but I'm wondering whether I will ever want better. I'm considering Manfrotto too
I will miss the 055 though I KNOW!
Why is your manfrotto 190MF4 not as sturdy as your 055 (which no doubt is heavier, but presumably not carbon)? I assumed the 190MF4 would be very good.

The 190 is very good but it is so light and the legs so thin that ON IT'S OWN it will not compete with the 055. It does provide a hook under the centre column to hang a bag which helps greatly with it's performance.

Even then there is an amount of flex in the carbon legs that does not exist in the aluminium 055.
