Yes
I am looking at a new tripod and wondered if anyone here has any experience of either of these models, looking for mainly outdoor use with a 1D and 300mm f/4 with Tc any further options welcome.

An assistant in a shop showed me both the 458B and 055MF4. The 458B had some play and didn;t appear quite so stable. THe only benefit is a few seconds saving putting it up. The 055MF3 would be much more stable. The 458B had some bend in the legs with a bit a pressure. Also the 055MF3 is cheaper.

I'd go MF all the way. I have a 055PRO as my heavy duty tripod and a 190MF4 as a lightweight. The 190 is short but the MF makes it much more stable as a platform - with a modified column, it takes a 1D and 500 f/4 fine.

Chris,

I use a 190 with 141RC or 115 head....I also have a 488 ball head but I don't find this too clever for static shots with the 300/4 and t/c.

The tilt and pans are both fine though and lock without moving.

Bob
