Hi All,

Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy the above kit would be?
My ancient Velbon has bought the farm, so I need a new one :(

The 190X proB with the 486 head seems to be a good choice, but I'm not sure if I couldn't get something cheaper that fulfils my needs?

My tripod needs:

* Less than 2KG
* Fairly compact when closed
* Can hold 3.5KG (30D + 12-24 or Sigma 100-300 F/4 with some space for expansion later on)
* Quick release system that is easy to find the plates for.
* Ball head.

I really like the look of the 190X pro B but I'm not sure i would get enough use out of it to justify spending £160+. If there is a solid alternative out there for less I would like to hear it! :)

Thanks!

EDIT: If i was to buy the Manfrotto 728B would the 486RC2 fit it? It states that the head is "built in" which makes me think not. It looks to fulfil my requirements otherwise... Still not mega cheap tho ;)

I just recently bought this almost to the same quality as the manfrotto but a bit cheeper, its the Giottos part way down the page

Yeah, I had looked at that. 2 Issues as far as i can see are that it ways 3KG, which is excessive imho, also the ball head looks a bit fiddly compared to the 1 lever system that the Manfrotto's seem to have.

Thanks for the suggestions all, going to check the links and see what i can see.

It is a bit heavier than the manfrotto but not too much. The ball head isn't that complicated, its only one knob to tighten, the other is a fine tune which can be handy but I dont use it much.

Yeah, not sure if 1KG will make all the difference though. Depends how long I am out for I guess.
My bag with all camera kit at the moment weighs 5KG give or take. Adding another 3KG + coat/sarnies/drink etc soon adds up. I'm only using the tiny lowe-pro mini trekker, which doesn't seem to be overly comfortable when carrying these weights.
So if i assume 9kg all-in-all thats nearly 20 lbs. The SAS only carry 36 on training :lol: (ok, so they carry minimum 36 and maximum 55 - jeez).
I dunno, maybe its too late to worry about weight with the kit I have, too late to start to be efficient with the kit :lol:
Im not even sure that the 1KG difference will be felt, but the last thing I want is to be put off from taking the tripod out.....

I have learned one thing though. Picking a tripod, head and QR system is harder than picking a DSLR was :lol:

Thanks for the help so far guys ;)

Hi All,

I saw an offer on Ffordes for the 190x Pro B legs and the 486RC2 head, £109.99 inc vat. I ordered that and a spare QR plate for my sigma 100-300.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was very close to buying the Giottos but I read some mixed views on the quality of the head and didn't want to risk it, especially as I got the Manfrotto for the same price :D

Cheers :woot:

Thats a super tip - and exactly the combo that I was looking for. Same setup is >150 quid on wharehouse express, Ffordes rocks

Whatever you choose I can recommend the Optech Pro tripod strap - makes my 55PROB+804RC2 head seem light as a feather despite the fact it's near 2.5kg :thumbs:
