Hi,

i am looking at heading to mam tor in the next few days but i haven't been before and its about an hours drive from me so unfortunately i will not get chance to recky the place before i go.

my question is how much of a walk is it from the car park to the gates which are photographed ? so i can adjust my setoff times to compensate for the walk and to make it for a sunrise.

It's about 20 minutes to the gates (you can park in the lay-by closest to the top) but I'm not sure why that's such a popular shot, there's so many other options up there. Back Tor further along the ridge is rather good, takes about 30 minutes, possibly a little longer to get to though. Take water as it's thirsty work if you have a heavy kit bag

I've bought myself a peak district book for photo locations so my aim is to get to all of them and scout about a bit get some take home images and get better from there.

But thanks for the heads up for the walk

Although i would recommend getting there well in advance as pre sunrise is usually better than sunrise itself.

i was planning on getting there about 45 mins before the rise itself plenty of time?

Yes definitely for colour in the sky. But the best light in the landscape will be up to a couple of hours after sunrise

Nice one. Always good to get there well in advance.....it's good to stand there and look, then crack open the camera :)

Cheers and enjoy the view, it's a belter.

I hope you get a good morning, I went for the sunrise a month ago, here's the result:

After the sunrise, there should be a lovely light to the West, have a look around that way before coming down, there's the snakey road and the hills curving round to Kinder Scout.
It's a beautiful area, I'm going up there with wifey today and stopping overnight in Bamford, this one will be more for the walking than photography though.

well i managed to whiz down today, set off at 4am arrived about 6 (i went to look for the lay-by further up the road but i couldn't find it so i had to go back to the car park and pay my £3 for the days parking. Not sure which image is my best for the day but for a first proper go at a landscape i feel i did alright - i will make another post to get some opinions on my take on the place. Thanks for all your input guys and gals!

Quite nice that. Thought there could be more mist this morning as it's usually a hotspot there. There's a small lay by right at the top between Mam Tor and Rushup Edge, though it isn't immediately obvious I suppose. There's another larger one around the corner as you're heading down into Edale. Will save you £3 for next time

Where is this famous gate, I have looked on google maps and it's difficult to spot. Is it here

I live 2 hours away (more with road works) so any Help I can get makes it better.

your co-ordinates are on Rushup Edge/Lord's seat. Close, but try looking East from 53.352024, -1.808278

I'm planning a trip here soon as it's a stones throw from where I live. Some amazing pictures here I can't wait to go now

I might pay this a visit

last time I was there I parked on the verge right by the cut through and ran to the gate (5 mins)... normally a 10 mn walk or so, depending on your speed
