Well im looking at making my own website, not sure which way to go though, im not wanting to part with alot of cash, been looking at clickpic which looks ok, can anyone recommend clickpic or any other site for that matter, i also saw a site called www.wix.com, this again looks a good site but its all new to me.....

Andy

Wix looks a pretty good place to start, their minimilist template would be good for a photography site.

As with most things in life you'll get what you pay for, but as a starting point it'll work fine. You can always run a Wix (or similar flash template site) for a while and then figure out what it doesn't do for you and take that to a web developer or look around for paid templates that fit your needs.

Buy Dreamweaver and make your own - using someone else's template is not your own website.

What do you want it for? Forum? Blogging? Business? Photo showcase?

I think a lot of it depends on what you want the website for ...

Business

Then don't skimp. It is your first impression on a lot of people!

Photoshelter always get a lot of recommendations.

If you have never had much to do with design and esp. web design avoid doing it yourself from scratch, the time will take you ages and generally you will get an inferior product.

Want a decent photo, you employ a photographer

Want a decent website, get a designer.

Learn and work on web design by all means, but not for your business site without any practice. You risk turning away custom which in the longer term will be much more costly than anything you spend on a site. Think of it another way, woudl you put in your portfolio, the first images you ever took with a camera?

^^ what he said. You're expecting people to part with their money because you're better at taking pictures than them. Don't scrimp on the primary way they'll be able to find you!

Hi All!

I'm very new here, but an 'old hand' on a well-known, UK computer forum and have produced a website for a tiny company where my step-bro works.

If it's for your business, I agree with apkent and ding76uk.

However, as Sebastian says, it can be done on your own, but make sure it looks professional (I had a look, Sebastian - nice:thumbs:!)

I have Serif WebPlus X4; there's a 'Starter Edition' - FREE. If you get that, Serif will make you a very tempting offer to upgrade - half the retail price, something like that.

Have a look here:

Good luck;)!

Its just the same as the debate between using a professional photographer and an amateur. You get what you pay for so if you want a professional look then pay for a professional web designer.

I'm a web designer and happy to offer free advice and help with setting up your web site.

Just drop me a PM if you have any web related questions (Where to get themes, how to install wordpress, what host to choose etc...)

Thanks,
Grant
