Yes
over the past few days my laptop has pretty much ground to a halt, everything it does is slow and laborious, usually its seriously quick. nothing i can do really makes it any quicker, its actually impossible to listen to music anymore as sound slows down and everything sounds robotic as its slowed down. it now takes over 5 minutes to load up on a restart

ive not installed anything prior to the problem, i was getting low on disk space prior to the problem occuring but thats been rectified and appears to have no effect on it as the harddrives have been cleared to have over 45% free space each and have been defragmented. i have also done complete scans with AVG antivirus, spybot S+D and adaware and nothing bar a few tracking cookies was found.

the only think i have noted is that thier are now alot of processes running in the background, non of which i can find to cause any improvement when closed. CPU useage appears to be pretty much maxed out but the only thing thats using CPU for the majority of time in the processes tab is "system idle"

heres a list of them all-

This site will help you to find out what all that stuff is for.

You might also go to Start>>Run, and type "msconfig". Click the Startup tab, and that will show you everything that gets launched automagically when you switch on your PC.

You can also open Task Manager, go to Processes and check out what is hogging all your CPU time (under the CPU column - percentages).

I've had a look around and msmsgs.exe could be the cause of your problem as it indicates possible virus infection which causes, among other things, system slowdown.

More here.

That will be the one.

But I see that you have an Acer lappy with all the pre-installed gumpf that comes with it. If it is anything like the Sony lappy I recently sold, I would strongly advise de-installing all bundled bloat that came with the machine. This action had a huge effect on my Sony.

Looks like a tonne of viruses, spyware or trojans there. Check your anti-virus is up-to-date. Install some Spyware killer too.

msmsgs = "it's the Messenger service that XP uses to alert Microsoft of updates and such, different from the MSN Messenger." apparently - though it seems it can be used by some viruses, wouldnt say it is deffinatly the problem. If you have AV and Firewall they should pick up on that doing anything odd.

you can remove msmsgs from add/remove programs and going into the add/remove windows components section, scroll down to windows messenger and remove it ! It wont affect MSN Messenger, as they are seperate entities.

It is one of the routes nasties get onto your computer and is the first thing i remove when i get new computers !

Not certain its the cause of your slowdown, what AV program are you using ?

You could try this - http://www.pctools.com/aoss/?ref=news_pctr

It lets you create a bootable CD which runs a virus/spyware check without using the PC's own OS, so in theory it should recognise hidden nasties which are difficult to remove when Windows is running. ;)

go to run then type services.msc and scroll down and disable windows messenger. kind of asking for trouble running it.

Ideally you only need around 18 services running. Anything above that and your wasting system recources.

Below is a highlighted list of gumpf/virus'/trojans/spyware What you really need to do is back you files up, format and reinstall nothing but windows basic and PC Tools Spyware Doctor (buy it, it is very very good)

Off the top of my head thats all s***e, get rid/disable using services.msc asap. or like i said above, format and reinstall. If you are anywhere near felixstowe Ill help you do it, got many years experience fixing/building pc's.

dont be using your credit cards on that laptop until its sorted.

King.

EDIT: UNINSTALL AVG FREE ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE IF YOU HAVE WHICH I THINK YOU DO.

I couldn't be bothered to check up on your list, but I know for a fact that at least half a dozen of the ones you're telling him to remove are not spyware/trojans at all. For example, shared internet connections might stop working if you get rid of ALG.EXE. Its part of windows and completely harmless.

Why are you telling him to remove AVG?

download lavasoft adware, spybot 1.4 and avg antispyware free and scan with them and that should remove the problems

*1 No buts its gumpf, services that dont need to be ran in order to achieve something.

AVG is an absolute brute. It has casued more problems for me in the past than what its worth.

You can actually run a windows system on very little processes. Ill find the link regarding which services can be disabled and you'll be surprised how many can. When I was using PC's (moved to mac becasue I got fed up of having to overhaul the system every 3 months due to the awfully bad way windows falls apart) I ran as littel as 12 processes sometimes. Upon overhauling there were a merge 8 - 10 running. the amount of crap that windows runs in the background is amazing. You really dont need that many.

I use SpyBot regularly ... seems to keep me clear of problems ... over and above normal AV of course ... ;)

:p

never had a problem with AVG, far less of a pain than nortons or macafee!

Me either. It makes me laugh when people complain that AVG finds more viruses than Norton does. Surely that's a good thing?

i upgraded to the pro version of AVG, not really much different from the free one though...

ive been using avg for years but recently lots of rubbish and viruses coming thru. I have now bought PrevX1 for £14 PER YEAR. is great...finds stuff avg doesnt find... viruses (or is that virii!) spyware etc etc.

How about a screenie of your Task manager?

Which process is using all the CPU power.

If system idle is the only process maxed out then the system has no load from anything that shows there.

How old is the laptop? Sounds like some kind of hardware conflict/fault to me. I'd try booting in safe mode and also boot from a CD to see if a driver is making it slow due to problem hardware. No badly seated connections on hard drive(s) CD module...memory...anything?

ive got the running processes down to 25 and it seems a bit better, so im gonna keep stripping it down, found a few bits with AVGspyware.

my laptops is 6 months old (remember the thread anyone!),

i appear to have lost the task manager as well now, when it comes up it shows only the running processes and the end process button, no tabs or box frame or cpu usage figure

any help would be great
taskmanager.jpg

still not having much joy but im trying to disable a few things in services.msc to see if that helps

sound is still useless though as is watching videos and its still slow

Just under the box where it says "Show processes from all users".....double click that grey area..that'll get you your title bar back :)

ive found the backup/recovery program for my computer but ive deleted the program that it uses to burn the DVD, so im trying to reinstall it now. hope it works.

ill keep you all upto date, this is really annoying me now!

good luck, let us know how you get on.

what should i do? short of throwing it out of the window im a tad lost
