Mad or logical?

I'm pondering...

When I first wanted to learn photography (after drowning my little Casio digital camera at the top of Snowdon) I wanted to learn the basics first, so I got myself a mint fully manual (apart from the light meter of course) Olympus OM1-MD.

Now I have learned (well a bit anyway!) about shutter speeds and f stops I'm thinking of getting rid of some kit and getting a Canon 1N or 3.

I already have a 30D and a Sigma full frame 24-70mm f2.8 jobby so it would twin that nicley and the lens can be interchanged. Also have a cheaper 70-300mm Sigma full frame lens.

The OM-1 I have has the proper Oly motor drive, 50 and 28mm lens, the proper original leather hard case etc...

Would I be mad to sell all this and go to the EOS 1 or 3?

If I'm thinking logicaly it is a good backup camera, weather sealed (so it won't drown on the top of Snowdon!). It would also be nice to get the full 24mm of the Sigma.

Also would back up the 30D for the wedding I'm doing later in the year.

With a nifty fifty on the end of an EOS film it I'll still be able to enjoy the creativity of f1.8 as well.

Now, do I sell up and go for an EOS or not... hmmm

Don't want to drown myself in to much kit!

Seems to make more sense now I've typed it all out!

Seems quite logical to me. A common lens mount means only one set of lenses required, so limits your duplication of equipment. And a secondhand Canon EOS film camera would be quite cheap now. I'd say go for it. :)

Sounds like a reasonable progression. I've done what you're talking about in reverse. I started off with a D200, then got an F5 and now i'm enjoying using a fully manual (except light meter) Kodak Retina IIs. The new tech definitely opens up more possibilities but I think it's important that the fundamentals of photography are understood.
In short, do it!

it is logical! but I would say, make sure your happy with selling your first (proper!) camera!

I wouldn't sell mine for a trillion pounds!

not that any banker can afford that at the mo:lol:

Hmm... now it depends on how much I could sell it for. Will have to do some looking. I think this sort of thing holds its value not to badly.

I saw an XA go for £124 recently, it's tempting to sell! Only cost me £54!

Shot my last roll with the OM yesterday... now it's in the for sale section.

Shot some Fuji Pro 160, very nice stuff!
