Yes
A friend of mine asked if the body matters for macro, he's already decided on the tamron 90mm and was looking at a Nikon d200 or 3100, not ever had Nikon myself I don't know if any of these are a bit old hat or would these be a good cheaper option for the body or should he be looking for something a little more up to date? Thanks

Either will do the job, I used to have a D200 and it did macro well, you should be able to pick up
a 2nd hand one quite reasonably priced
It's more down to what lens he looking at using

I agree with Ingrid, :agree: I started out shooting macro a few years back, using an entry level DSLR and a Sigma 105mm macro and had some terrific results

so NO the body is not all that important - the choice of lens however IS

Les ;)

Yes he knows the lens he wants { tamron 90mm} but wasn't sure if an older tech body would have an effect on the images

Is the d5000 any good? Thinking the swivel screen would handy for macro work

That would be up to the individual, I personally prefer to look through the viewfinder, but if he prefers the rear screen live view
then possibly

Yep as already said the body doesn't matter for macro but if you like using live view then a swivel screen could be handy:)

A swivel screen is invaluable if you are photographing insects and if they are at low level.

I photographed a Spider outdoors a few days ago on my Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro lens and would not have been able to get the shots without the swivel screen on my 70D.
