Hi
At the moment I'm useing a Canon 350D, Sigma 17-70mm DC macro lens and no tripod. The lens is a replacement for the kit lens, but has a 1:2.3 max magnification at 70mm (112mm with the 1.6x FOV crop of the 350D). I've found that the min focus is about 15mm infront of the outer lens element, Sigma state minimum focus distance of 0.2m (200mm)!?
Ok, I have a limited budget this month and thought it better spent on a tripod & head before getting a dedicated 1:1 macro lens.
Bits -
Tripod - Manfrotto 055 Pro - just oredered so I can't change this now
Head - Manfrotto 804 RC2 3-way head - same as above.
Flash - Pop-up for now.
Lens - Tamron 90mm macro - wish list item.
Accessories - Reflector, anything else?
The head, I feel the 804 should be fine for the lens I'm using, but will it suffice once I get the macro lens. Would a geared head & focus plate be advantagous or are they expensive toys?
The lens, the Tamaron has very good reviews and is affordable, but is there any advantage/disadvantage of getting a lens with a longer focal length?
The flash, essential for macro? to expensive for my pocket at the moment but it's usefull to know what works.
The accessories, with a flash being to expensive for now I'll be relying on natural light & pop-up flash. Will a small/medium handheld Reflector be of use?
Your thoughts & experiances on the matter please.
Thank you.
