Hello,

I'm tempted to get the manual flash that FlashInThePan sells (YN460) but it's manual. With a manual flashgun like this, will it be difficult to work out F-stop settings when taking photos of insects outside? I'm not keen on paying extra for a PTTL one unless there are good reasons to get PTTL capability. Thanks for any info.

Id just use a manual one and then do a load of test shots at the said aperture, should get you a good idea of it. But dont listen to me, my technique is shabby :bonk:

I have a flashgun with TTL....on my macro shots I use it in manual though, its good to have diffusers on it, I use the built in one and also the one that fits the light end.

I have jsut got a Bar from FITP to rig it all up for my macro work, which allows the light to sit on the top left (or right) of the lens, to produce a more 'head on' light effect.

Its let me get shots up to f.32 due to the power, and gives great DOF.

Your question though lol .......... You should be able to figure out quite quickly what setting for which F. etc, not sure how low FITP light goes to but I shoot any where from 1/1 to 1/16...

for that price though you cant go wrong.

HTH??

E-TTL is great, but if you don't mind a little trial and error, manual with cheap guns is also good.

Sam's advice is spot on  Do some test shots and you'll quickly know what sort of power you need, at what kind of f/numbers, at typical distances. Then make your best guess, fire off a test frame, and adjust brighter/darker to suit.

Bear in mind that when you're working close, just a few inches of distance from the flash to the subject will make a big difference to the exposure level.

Thanks everyone, looks like a YN460 for me then.

Robbo, not sure what the Bar is that you mentioned - searched thru FlashInThePan's thread and couldn't see it. Mind you, the thread is a zillion page long.

Re the YN460, it goes down to 1/64th power.

HoppyUK, good point, once I've set exposure I should try not to change distance.

its on page one, think its under the wedding bits and bobs, you can see a picture where the flash is mounted to the side of the camera etc, its on the bar, and you can position the light how you wish as it is connected on a ball and socket
