Recently went to buy sigma 105mm macro lens and dealer suggested I have the 70mm instead, now not sure what to do ,any advice welcome

Choosing the right focal length will, to a large degree, depend on what sort of subjects you're looking to shoot.

Some idea of where you're heading will allow people to give you better advice.

It may also depend on the body you are using it on. If a crop body the 70mm may be better as it gives you about the same AOV as a 105mm on full frame, The 105mm on a crop body will give you about 160mm and may be longer than you need or want.
 
I have the 105 and it'll give you a couple more inches than the 70 to work with. This is an advantage if you are shooting insects or living things as getting too close or casting shadows can, frustratingly scare them off.

I've not used the 70 but I believe they have pretty equal optics. I know the 105 is superb optically.
 
Generally, all the prime macros - whichever brand you opt for - are great lenses. Which one you decide to go for depends solely on what you choose to shoot, as has already been said.

I have the 105 Sigma, and it's a fantastic lens. If you really need the 105, you can easily buy it online for a number of stores .. even Amazon list them :thrug: ... so, decide on what you intend to shoot and then buy the ideal focal length.

If you're too new to macro, then the 105 is a "safe" bet as it'll give you better shooting distance which will allow you to shoot flowers, bugs, plants, and a whole lot more.

Were both in stock? My cynical response is the 70mm was suggested because that's all they had. What reasons did the dealer give for the 70mm over the 105?
 
Looking at reviews the 70mm comes across as being a better lens than the 105mm. Of course anyone with the 105 will dissagree.
