Ok, other than getting a dedicated macro lens, is there anything else I really should buy before attempting macro photography?

I've narrowed it down to either the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro or the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM macro lenses (which I also would like help deciding on).

I am also looking at getting a 430ex flashgun as the only flash I have at the moment is the onboard flash on the 350D which I am guessing will be next to useless for macro?

I already have a Manfrotto 714B tripod with a 484RC2 head that should be sturdy enough for my needs.

Is there anything else that I should be considering?

The lens is the main thing I guess. As far as image quality there's really not much to choose between the Canon and the Sigma. I have the Sigma as I wanted the extra working distance it gives which is useful for shooting insects, it also comes with a hood, case and tripod collar.

Both lenses have fast, quiet focusing but that means nothing for macro as you'll need to use manual focus to get the sweet spot.

Deciding between the two is really down to what focal length will be best for what you're shooting and what else you might use the lens for.

The only other thing you'll need if you want to use flash is an off cord lead and some sort of bracket plus maybe some kind of diffuser. Apart from that, practice makes perfect ;)
