A bit of advise please!

I've recently bought a Canon 100mm macro and after reading the "macro rig" thread have lashed my 430EX onto the lens hood with a stofen diffuser and off camera cord.

I've got the camera (50D) set to iso100 1/250 in manual and vary the aperture. The flash is just left to TTL. Is this a reasonable approach as results seem quite variable?

Hope this is the right forum:thinking:

Cheers:thumbs:

is it a ttl cord or a pc cord - the ttl cord will go on the hot shoe of the camera and let it meter properly

try with massive apertures as the flash being close to the subject and will make it apply a lot of light even at its lowest power setting

Its a ttl cord, generally use f11-16.

That's pretty much the approach I use! Generally ISO 200/400, manual, shutter speed 1/200 (that's the max sync speed, so if you set it at 1/250 it'll probably drop I think  ), and vary the aperture around f/11 to make sure exposure is o.k. As you said, it's a bit variable, but it's all my little head can get around, so it'll have to do for now!

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm needing to understand this too - If I read this right then manual mode around 1/200, f11 ish ISO 100 / 200 and the flash will take care of the rest - anything else I should consider ? I'm using a 450D
