I am really enjoying macro photography, but recognise I am only just scratching the surface. I have a Tamron 90mm at present but have decided to splash out and get the Canon 100mm f2.8 L IS. I have no flash whatsoever and recognise that this is the next step. All pics to date have been handheld without flash:

I am thinking of buying a Speedlite 430, rather than a ring flash, as this will give me more options with my other lenses. I would really appreciate some advice on the following:
1) Will the Speedlite be fit for purpose ( I am aiming to shoot more insects, bugs, butterflies etc)?
2) Do I need a diffuser and if so what (e.g. Lumiquest Softbox)?
3) Do I need a bracket and if so what?
4) Does this mean that I need an offshoe cord?
Many thanks for any advice. Hugh
