My macbook pro just died on me. White screen of death. I can't get it to boot from CD (and have lost a osx cd into it).

I can reset pram and vram

Question is does it sound like a logic board if it will not boot from CD?

Of course I am an idiot and as it is work machine I have not backed up so will have to buy an enclosure to see if I can rescue data from the drive.

Any experience of this anyone?

Oh dear sounds serious. It may be the logic board if it wont boot from the CD. Problem is most of the inside is the logic board, and replacing this could be expensive.

You might want to try:

http://www.macbookprorepairs.com/macbook-pro-logic-board-repair.html

Now I have no knowledge of this company. They simply came up as a search for Logic boards for Macs. They claim to repair the board, if possible, rather than the costly board replacement. may be worthwhile giving them a call

I'd bet my mortgage on it being something on the logic board. It is repairable, depending on the age of it though it doesn't always mean its worth repairing. Does it not have AppleCare?

Do you have another mac that you can boot it into? Target disk mode for example will save you having to buy an enclosure. Also if it boots up another mac then you will know if it's the graphics card or something else on the logic board

It's difficult to say what it is exactly. How old is it? The reason I ask is that Macbooks of a certain age and model are covered under repair extension program should the graphic processor fail, and the pure white screen could indicate it's a graphic processor failure. This coverage only applies if the the MacBook pro is less than 4 years old.

In any event you should get it to an authorised apple service centre where they can run a diagnostic and confirm this is the case.

The other things it could be is the display unit itself, possibly RAM, or potentially the hard disk. I've seen hard disks fail in such a way that they block the entire computer, effectively producing very similar symptoms to what you're seeing.

Good luck in any event.

id try target disk boot also, you can get your data off if that works too

A friend of mine has just had this happen, and then two days later one at work did the same. Logic board in both cases :(

Mine died last night. White screen with a folder icon with a ? inside it. I'm told I need a new hard drive. I am so pleased I bought a Time Capsule!

Update on this. Tried target disk mode with no luck. wouldn't boot into it. Not good! Think it will have to go to Apple store. Along with my iMac and iPhone. Spate of bad Apples in my house at the moment!

Well the bad news is that your drive may have failed. But the good news is that it might not be the logicboard. Can you boot it up from another mac?
