Hi - is anybody using a 128g MacBook Air tethered to Lightroom? I'm wondering if the flash memory can cope.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks - Graeme.

Not MacBook Air, just MacBook Pro but also with 128GB SSD. The only downside for SSD is the size, with my stuff + apps installed there is not much free space left on it.

Yes that combination will work well. I have used it before with a Mac Book Air but now use it with a Mac Book pro which has flash memory. I would reccomend a high quality USB cable up to 15 ft in length such as the one from Tether Tools and to reformat your card in the camera prior to the shoot as lightroom 4 struggles to detect the camera if multiple folders are present on the card. I also use a portable Lacie rugged hard drive connected to it so not to use the onboard memory.
Cheers Rob

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I'm gradually talking myself into it!

Hi Rob - thank you for coming back to me. I think I'm going to go for it ion that basis. And thanks for the tip re reformatting the card - that would explain some previous issues I've had with LR4. Appreciate your help - Graeme.

Yeah the MBA uses "just" an SSD. Though it's sprinkled with Apple pixie dust so it's slightly faster than most and much more expensive than any other :)

I have an SSD in my MBP and it works beautifully with tethered capture. IIRC the Pro-Centre recommend only SSDs for tethered computers because performance is so much better.

Personally I'd buy a MBP and upgrade it but having carried one round London yesterday, a MBA would be nice.

Don't think you can really go wrong with SSD, the speed you get over the HDD is incredible. :)

+1, I didn't want to pay Apple price for my SSD and just got it later from Amazon. Works perfectly fine and over a year later no problems with it. :)

There is a massive variance in quality/speed though. I have 2 SSDs and a couple of spinning metal drives in the latest desktop.

One of the SSDs actually bench tests very slightly slower than a particularly fast spinning metal drive I have. The other one is ridiculously quick.

I know that, was just adding that Apple SSD is not magically better than those available to buy later on. I bought Crucial M4, which is not exactly a slow SSD. :)

i use my mba for tethered capture and it is awesome - not sure an MBPro will be a lot different - if both have an ssd i suspect the USB connection and the camera transmission will be the bottleneck

also being tethered accidents happen - it's cheaper to pull an MBA off the table than an MBpro, and as it's lighter it's more likely to survive

Hi,

I've been planning to upgrade my MBP with an SSD, but every time I do some research on the matter my tiny brain is left spinning and confused with all the tech specs, views and reviews. Consequently my gut reaction would be to take the easy route and get a Crucial drive as I always buy my memory from them and had excellent service.

I assume you're happy with your setup? Or with hindsight would you go another route?

Many thanks.

Cheers,
Tony

NB: I apologise if it's bad form to take the OP's thread a little bit off topic, but as his question has been answered I thought it'd be okay.

SanDisk Extreme is very happy in my desktop Mac. The "slow" one is an OCZ Solid3.

Not sure what's in the MBP - probably an OCZ Agility.

I have 2010 i5 MacBookPro, it came with 320gb 5200rpm drive and 4GB of RAM. Now it has 8GB of Crucial made RAM and 128GB Crucial M4 SSD. I can't be more happy with it. The upgrades was worth the money. If I had to make the choice again I would definitely go for it. :)

Also now the 256GB SSD costs as much as I paid for my 128GB over a year ago. :)

p.s. sorry for moving the thread off topic. :(

Well just to come back in at this point... I was on the verge of buying the MBA, then at the last minute saw an 8gig, 750 gig MBP on amazon for £1100 and couldn't resist it. Hope I haven't made a horrible mistake now, reading your posts above!

Thanks - Graeme

I have a 250 gig ssd and a 1tb in my macbook pro with 16 gig ram and it is lightning quick
I do audio studio work as well ...
I tried tethering on each hd and would say it is worth using the ssd

128gig might feel pretty tight for space if shooing raw
