Is there any way to have your various Inbox folders split out along with the other folders for each account rather than all 'treed' at the top? For example:

Inbox
Sent
Trash
------
Inbox
Sent
Trash
------
Inbox
Sent
Trash

etc. etc.?

It gets confusing having the folders in one place and the inboxes in another but I can't find a way to split them out :shrug:

I havent found a way either - most annoying is that if you run an archive export on your mail, then import it in again [say for example when you are upgrading your machine], thats exactly how mac mail organises the import [well, thats what it has done on mine, each email adress and its relevant folders are in separate sections] :bonk:

Hmmm, bit of a PITA.

Just wondering out loud, if you created 'new' inbox folders within the folder structure for each account, and then set up mail rules to forward incoming mail to each respective folder, would that work I wonder? :thinking:

Show us a screen shot (shift command 4 and select the area) of what you mean.
As with any type of help, you need to provide more info at the outset - so what version of OS X are you using?
What email account type are you referring to - pop3 or imap?

No need for screen shot tbh, it's the standard Mac Mail layout.

Email accounts are various (Exchange, IMAP, etc.).

Snow Leopard.

So how does yours differ?

The two in black are IMAP gmail, which when I go to the Settings in GMail online, I can turn on/off various folders.
The three greyed out are defunct old pop3 accounts.

ive got a test mac on my desk, i'll have a fiddle (with the mac)..

Thanks Neil. I've been playing around with mail rules this morning, but it's all a bit clunky (and not overly accurate) so I'm not sure that's the solution.

May just have to learn to live with it :(

It doesn't, which is why I was asking if it could be changed :suspect:

Well, going by your first post, it was indicating a completely different look to how it is.
I don't see where there's a problem - you can collapse the boxes, so that you don't see the individual accounts, ending up with:

Inbox
Drafts
Sent
Trash

The list of folders you see in my shot, are just that, with associated rules, making it easier to keep specific messages collated.

I don't get how you think/find the way it's been organised in Mail is anything less than logical and common sense.
And Neil won't be able to help, not unless he has the ability to re-program OS X, since there'll be no hooks into the APIs controlling the appearance.

I would suggest perhaps you re-read the opening post Phil.

Thanks for looking Neil, appreciate it.

i was going to see if there was any workaround like using smart folders and/or rules.

unfortunately there isnt.

Why not set up local folders and rules on incoming mail:

* Local Folder - Account 1 Inbox
* Local Folder - Account 1 Sent
* Local Folder - Account 2 Inbox
* Local Folder - Account 2 Sent

Then set up a mail rule on incoming mail where if the to address is the address for Account 1 it moves it to the Account 1 Local Inbox, if it is to the address for Account 2 it moves it to the Account 2 Local Inbox etc.

Repeat this for the outgoing emails and that should sort it I think.

youd still have a mish mash of folders though, not the grouped ones?

I've been playing around with this this morning as well. In theory it 'works' although it does leave duplicate folders etc. (yes, I know the tree can be collapsed) which makes it even less organised that the generic set up to my mind.

It would be easy if I wasn't such an organisational OCD'er! :lol:

Mac Mail has never looked as elegant as it should and I don't care for the default structure, adding VIP etc just adds to the clunk. Closing the structure down (clicking the pointer) does make it neater though short term.

I suspect that my biggest issue is that I hoard stuff rather than binning it. Need to let go...
