Back up via time machine then wipe the drive and install OS x again, then when prompted reinstall files and software from the time machine backup. Worked a treat on my mbp

I've never, ever had to reinstall OSX on any of my Macs. If your Mac is running slow, then you need to figure out what is using up your resources. Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? Check your Activity Monitor under Utilities in your Applications folder, you may be able to identify the resource hog that way.

BTW, is it maxxed out with RAM and how full is the hard drive?

Usually Macs only run slow when something is using resources it shouldn't do.
As others have said, check activity monitor for anything suspicious that using a lot of CPU cycles.
There are very few things a whole osx reinstall will fix. And there are much easier ways to fix things like this.

totally agree. A reinstall is not the answer, if it is running slow then there is a process somewhere that is taking up the time. It doesn't even need things like defragging etc. If anything it should speed up over time as it optimises the caching.
Look in your activity monitor what is using up your resources, look in the console for repeating entries. Also a poor network DNS could cause those kind of experiences...

First of all back up all your stuff. If the mac is running painfully slow, with the spinning beachball appearing all of the time then one thing to consider is that the hard disk may be packing up.
Apple is running a recall on certain iMac's made in 2011. You can check if you're affected here.
While errant processes can slow a machine down, they should never really affect the speed of the user interface much. In virtually all cases of painfully slow macs I've had lately it's been down to a failing hard disk.

That's interesting.I bought my 27inch i5 Mac in March and the drive failed on the 2nd day. It was replaced no argument and I've had no issues since . I know it's not between the relevant dates, but it's nice to know and does make you wonder.
