Hi
I've just got myself a Mac pro. Do Mac have a specific photo editing software, or am I better off getting the new Lightroom

Thanks

You can use Aperture if you want but I prefer to lightroom. What spec is the pro?

2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
256GB flash storage1

Go for LR5:-)

How does iphoto and light room compare with Aperture?. Are they similar or miles apart?

Lightroom every time. I seldom have to use PS for any wedding photos now since LR5.

Aperture is the way to go for mac users

There is reputedly a version 4 of Aperture bring released later this year, which I think I shall wait for. I was wondering if I bought version 3 now, Apple would offer a free upgrade when 4 arrives, but after visiting the Apple Communities Support site, the answer is no.

As a Mac user, I decided to go for Lightroom, because it includes such features as lens correction and generally got better reviews for the precision and clarity of its editing features. Lightroom is a data based system and its real power as an asset image manager comes into play when you use the Filter bar to search based on key words etc.

I use LR5 myself. I also having Aperture 3 and DxO 8 installed along with Capture NX2 as a Nikon shooter. I prefer the organisational and editing tools over those of Aperture. I maintain my LR library on an external hard drive then export JPEGs to iPhoto on the internal hard drive so I can share them on my iPhone/iPad/Apple TV, this works well for me.

To begin with I used iPhoto, but then ran into a problem with the "wheel of death" syndrome and a refusal to open. Tried rebuilding and searched the net for a solution without success. Turned out I was not alone with that problem.
Never had a problem with LR and feel much safer knowing my originals are referenced and not swallowed up by the software. No doubt catalogue corruption is a possibility with LR, but shouldn't be a disaster with a disciplined back up routine.
However we still have to use Apple apps as long as we want iPads and Apple tv!

I am 'old hat'. I use Bridge and Photoshop, never quite got the hang of Lightroom. Its the weapon of choice for me. Only use iPhoto for uploading shots to my gallery. I thought Aperture was an 'organising' software, not an editing software?

iPhoto is quite limited. it is consumer grade and meant more to polish and image rather than for full PP.

I have never really got into aperture, I went straight into Lightroom.

i have iphoto lightroom 4 and CS6 on my mac, for me if im shooting jpeg i find iPhoto pretty good and allows full screen editing which i like. It fails on no presets so every image is start from scratch. i do feel lightroom is far more stable than iPhoto as ive had issues in the past with crashing and images showing as a black screen in iPhoto

Guys
On balance I think I will give Lightroom a go. Thanks very much for sharing your experience.
