I kept getting the 'spinning wheel of dead' on my Mac so I used Disc Utility, Verify Disk and repair disc. I got the message below when trying to repair.

Now, when I do as it states and get into the Disk Utility, none of the icons are clickable. I can't even shut down my Mac and have to hard restart.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Long time since this happened to me but don't you have to scroll with the keyboard?

I managed to be able to highlight Disk Utility, and move to Continue, but the Continue button does not work when click on it or hit the return key.

Cheers.

Just popped my old Mac into recovery mode as suggested to see what I get.
  • Cmd + R during boot takes me to OS X Utilities with 4 options. Restore from time machine, Reinstall OS X, Get Online Help and Disk Utility
  • I can select using the mouse and / or trackpad, but as you can't the cursor keys also let me select Disk Utility.
  • Pressing 'Tab' highlights the Continue button, and then pressing the space bar selects continue (note: Return does not. This is how keyboard controls worked yonks ago)
So if you are limited to the keyboard (I don't know why you would be though as I'm not), use the cursor keys to make selection within a control, use tab to move between controls and use the space bar to select or activate a control or button.

Just do what it says, your HD is damaged and that will fix it. Do a hard restart if that's the only way to do it, you need to start from the recovery and repair the disk. It's usually not as big a problem as it sounds.

What mac do you have? Some iMacs have known issues with particular hard drives (the 3TB HD REP, the older expired 1TB HD REP), others with video issues than can give hard drive like failure symptoms, and the non retina MacBook Pro 13" flex cable can give hard drive failure symptoms. Additionally some older MacBook Airs have issues with some Toshiba 64GB and 128GB flash storage SSD's.

Obviously try to repair with Disk Utility, but if that is unsuccessful a more advanced program such as Disk Warrior my be required, or the disk may be failing. If you haven't been regularly backing up now is the time to attempt it to avoid a possible data recovery.
