hello

Forgive me for the silly question...

I have a Mac that seems to be getting slower and slower, to turn on, to open apps, music, photos etc.

Do I need to get some kind of clean up programme or Internet security going forward ?

Thanks

Arran

No you don't need to. It's unusual for something to become slower and slower. There must be a reason why it is getting slower and slower. I would begin by taking a look in the log files to see what is causing the slow down. Something will be waiting on something or trying to communicate with something else?

If you haven't got anti virus installed I would install one the free options like sophos.

Thanks for that. I will see if I can work that out :)

OS's seem to have got bigger with more features which will also slow it down. My son has a MBP which was running slow. He tried the public beta of Sierra and recons that sped it up. Have a look a Neil says at Activity Monitor and see if you are using up all the memory you have. If so a memory upgrade may be the answer . You can also get a free widget MONIT which will sit in the notifications pane and let you know activity for CPU and memory whilst apps are running. same thing as Activity Montor, but a bit more accessable

Make sure you have a good back up of all your files.

I used to find that older versions of OSX (10.5) would slow down over time just like windows used to, but the more recent versions haven't been doing that.

Assuming your hardware is OK, a clean install of OS X (or MacOS) can work wonders. Backup, erase, install, restore.

I've always found anti virus software will slow things down even more.
