I use a Fotospeed CIS on my R3000. Used one on my previous R2400

They are excellent. Inks spot on. Just make sure whatever you use (inc originals) that you calibrate the printer and use the correct profile.

So if you change inks you need a new profile for each paper you use.

Places like Fotospeed and Permajet will provide free custom profiles for using their papers.

It can be a little fiddly but isn't too hard. I have the refillable ones for the R3000. I like it better than the ones with the tubes on my old R2400

Good and bad on these systems, not used them personally but a close friend has, they ruined his printer and it had to be replaced. Another member of our club ruined his printer too, both have got new printers and stuck with epson inks. More expensive to run, but both feel they will never go back to different ink and systems. This doesn't happen for everyone, but just something to consider.

Without knowing what people did with the ink is hard to blame the system for ruining a printer. I used mine in my R2400 for years without an issue. If you don't take any care then yes you could mess up. The refillable cartridges are much less likely to cause issues though. The ink is superb and 8x cheaper. I'm happy with my fotospeed system.

Thanks folks.
I've just started using Permajet because of recommendation from members of our club, but also because they do the profiling. I know what you mean about getting profiles for each paper but TBH the epson profiles I've been using with Epson paper and ink haven't given good enough results (yes the monitor is calibrated). Permajet have their generic profiles but say the only way to be spot on is to get a custom one.

@EOS_JD I will check out the fotospeed ink, thanks.
@Jango thanks for making me aware of potential problems.

@EOS_JD I do know what they did, nothing wrong at all, one of them is a top pro photographer, the rep came out from the ink company & Epson. I am just making the member aware that it isn't always the best, both used cis systems not filling the cartridges, that may work I don't know.

Top Pro photographers don't necessarily make top pro printers though..... Many top pro photographers also support the use of CIS systems too. Without seeing it neither of us really know.
I do know there can be issues though but rarely enough to render a printer useless without making errors - Like having the bottles too high or too low which can affect the flow of ink.

But the cartridge system in the R3000 is simple and much safer (still a tad more fiddly but not bad and worth the huge saving)- Although you still need to make sure there's always ink in the cartridges.

Thanks folks.

Permajet make great papers and inks (as do Fotospeed) - I use papers from both. The generic profiles you get are never great though - I agree with Permajet. - you need a custom profile for your system. Your paper and your ink/printer

I hope the OP won't mind me asking a supplementary question :)

I have been thinking of fitting a CIS to my Epson Photo 1400 but hate the idea of making modifcations to the lid and having tubes everywhere so was looking at re-fillable cartridges instead.

Does anyone have views on whether the Lyson or Marrutt systems are better?

TIA :)
