Hi everyone...
I'm looking for opinions on a decent compact digital camera for under £250.
I'm tending to favour the Lumix TZ7 which has a good zoom and HD video to boot but I'm open to any recomendations, on any make or model...
The camera itself will be replacing my old Canon Ixus which after giving many years of excellent service has finally packed up..
It will be mainly used for snaps and just generally carrying about with me to kids parties etc... but i would also like to use it for practice doing portraits and family shots.
Thanks in advance.

We have one and it's pretty good.

If you can strech to an LX3 it for about £270 second hand then we found that better than the TZ7 indoors, but of course it only has a very short zoom (think it equates to about 2.5).

Otherwise don't think you'd go wrong with the TZ7 or Ixus later versions, both seem very good.

I've always heard good things about the Ricohs as well.

For me - it was between the Lumix TZ7 and the Canon xs200is and to be honest if the Canons pop-up flash stayed in when not needed I would have had the canon - there is not to much between them on the picture quality for a PAS camera - although the TZ7 is versitile for such a small package:thumbs:

The canon fits my big hands better than the TZ but it was for my wife anyway - I would only use it the odd time - The quality of the video is very good and the stereo mic picup and ability to smoothly zoom while recording is also very good imho - for its price and compact size, it pack alot of features.

In short I am happy with the purchase! If you get one....there is an issue with third party batteries - so get a bundle deal with a proper Panni battery - if you need a spare that is.

O and a heads up on the case - The LowePro APEX 30 AW is excellent fit for the cam and will accept spare sdhc cards and battery - 7 dayshop has 8 gig sandisk card on offer for 14.99 delivered - class 6 and is 100% fine for the AVCHD video recording!

Hope that helps -:)

I have the TZ6 which is near enough the same but does not have HD video. If you don't need HD video i'd go for the TZ6. If you do want HD video then the TZ7 is a cracker though! Picture image quality will be the same as TZ6.

Examples of TZ6 images:

great shots there andy, i'm interested in the TZ 65 which apparently is similar to the TZ 6 only it has the bigger 3" screen as does the TZ 7 apart from that i understand there is little difference...........can anyone confirm this..

Does it not say on Panasonic's website?

I bought a TZ6 off a member here to replace an Ixus 4. As a point and shoot I am very pleased with the results indeed and would recommend it to anyone. The lens is made by Leica and has a 12 times optical zoom, plus 10.1MP which makes it very versatile. It has earned some well deserved awards (in my opinion). See the review here: TZ6 review

andy i can find no mention of the TZ 65 on their website, only the TZ6 & theTZ7 (i have emailed and am awaiting a reply, as they are to busy to answer phone apparently)

I would just go for the TZ6. The IQ is going to be the same and the screen is a good size.

FYI....the lumix TZ 65 is only available through the dixon chain of outlets !!!

I used to have a TZ65! I can confirm it has the same screen as the TZ7, in fact it's EXACTLY the same as the TZ7 except it lacks the HD video, and it's a DSG Group exclusive, so it's only sold at Currys, Dixons, PC World etc.

I liked it, but I broke the LCD and have just replaced it with a Canon SX200. I was getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of manual controls, and I got it for £215, and with £40 cashback on it too!

It's a great camera, and I'm happier with it than I ever really was with the TZ65. Hope it helps,

Chris

The 65 is the same as the 6 apart from the screen. I've got one

You can pick them up for around the £140 mark new (I did), and for a P&S they're good. I wouldn't mind something like the G11 though, for the manual controls & RAW shooting... ;)

The cheapest I have seen this camera was on the argos website and it was £260 so you might have to stretch your budget a bit if you really want this camera.

Since the U.K vat increase that came into force on January 1 I have seen most of the highstreet shops selling this camera for £299 so maybe you better hurry up and go to argos before they change their prices if you really want this camera!
