Morning all.

I've just exported 349 images from LR to a folder on my Mac. Prior to export I set image sizing to 7mb JPGs on output. I've noticed all the exported files are in the region of 1.5-2.5mb? anything I'm doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

Firstly, 7Mb is huge for a .jpg

secondly the size box on LR export is a size limit so it will reduce the size of the image should it exceed that limit.

Your file sizes are obviously the largest size they will be based on the quality and dimensions you have set.

Sorry, just checked and 7Mb is not that big for a jpg. Some of my 20mp images at 100 quality and full size are 20Mb+

However, it is still a size limit, so I'd check to see what output quality you have set and what physical dimensions you have set for the output.

Thanks for the reply. I have always left it at 7mb, never really thought about it until now. It's never changed the sizes before. As an experiment I exported a couple of random images individually and they kept the size I requested. It seems to be linked to a multiple export unless I'm doing something totally wrong.

I only have resize to fit 7mb resolution 300PPI. Seems strange it's suddenly changed the sizes

So, I've just exported a full size 20mp image. 3648x5472px, 100 Quality, no resizing and I set the file size limit to 7000k

The file size actually exported is 5.5Mb.

This is how I would expect it to work as I'm exporting at full size, full res so where does the exporter find additional information to bump up the file size?

Just about to do some Father’s Day duties and then I’ll copy your settings and see what I get

Okay, my last export was at 72ppi

If I export the same image to 300ppi my file size is 16.4Mb and with the 7000k limit to the file size it's 5.5Mb again.

I would remove the file size limit as the exported will have to throw away some information to fall within your file size limit. That will be either ppi or quality.

As you're exporting at 300ppi, I assume you are exporting for print?

Just copied your settings and got exactly the same result. Tried 3 together, also the same. I'm now attempting a full export again. I'll report back on the outcome

Totally confused. The majority this time came out at 5-5.2MB, yet some still sit at 2! I just checked, the original RAF file on one is 50MB, the exported JPEG is 2.1MB. Yet on another file the RAF is 50MB and the exported file 5.2. Very strange

This may or may not have any relevance... JPEG file sizes can vary quite a lot depending on the amount of detail within an image, even higher ISO/noisier images can make a difference, I believe it is to do with the algorithms used in the compression....

It seems to be the orientation. Portrait and the images are consistently 5-5.2. Landscape and they drop to 2. It must be a setting somewhere I’m assuming

Why don't you post a screen shot of your Lightroom export panel. Then we can see what you're actually doing and might have a chance of working out what's happening.

I mean, I have an idea as to why portrait and landscape images are being affected differently, but a glance at your export panel will tell me for sure whether or not I'm right.

Here are two grabs. Grab one is taken in portrait mode. Exported it's 6.5MB

Grab two is taken in landscape mode. Exported it's 2.5MB

I do believe we can see the problem from your two screen shots... your landscape image is only going to export at 3648 pixels wide...

You either need to reverse the pixel dimensions or;

Change 'width and height' to 'long side' and enter how many pixels you want the long side to be(in this case 5472 pixels)

Exactly.

Thank you all for your help. It's not until you have a fresh pair of eyes you sometimes realise you've missed the obvious. Thanks again.
