LR4 1:1 Previews

Hi all,

My main drive has filled up, so am looking to move my older photos to an external drive. If i render 1:1 previews of the pictures not on the local drive, what can i do to these pictures when the drive is not connected? Just preview and no edit. Preview edit and no export? Not too sure...
 
while the photos themselves aren't connected then you're develop sliders will all be greyed out and you won't be able to export
