LR3 v Photo Mechanic

I don't use it for sports but PM has changed my life for sorting and rating before going into LR, it's lightning quick compared to LR.

I concur, Photo Mechanic is an exceptional piece of software for captioning, I've never used Lightroom though, so can't compare the two.

Workflow for Photo Mechanic.

Ingest images into PM. This will renamew/number as required. Also installs pre created stationary pad template.
Select image(s) for editing (I always use the colour code for this so I know which have been selected). This has to be done with external editor as the one in PM is crap. Crop and save image into seperate folder if you need to save original as is.Open folder with cropped images (I call this Hirez) select image for FTP. Short cut is Ctrl+F to open ftp option. Reduce image to appropriate size ie 750 or whatever size you need and ftp to destination. I also save the reduced image in seperate folder (I call this Lorez!). Job done.

Not sure about LR as never used it so cannot compare.

The IPTC interface for PM is miles better than LR, it's rendering is faster and, as Patrick says, there isn't an option to ingest locked files only in LR, which makes in camera selection a bit pointless. PM also has a much better (ie integral) short cut facility for captioning (Textpad).

At the moment my workflow is:

Drag files to HD
Select with Faststone (as fast, if not faster than PM)
Import selected to LR with preset IPTC template (& develop setting depending on situation)
Edit files (crop, straighten, levels)
Caption
Export

I suspect that I'm going to be heading more towards PM in the near future, but still like the LR approach. A great deal of the decision between the two will be primarily down to speed of transmission requirement.
