A question for anyone who is using one of the V3 betas. If I install the beta alongside V2.6 will it use a different catalogue with the same image database?
Basically, I don't to corrupt my V2 catalogue but want to try V3 on my existing image database.

I am absolutely loving using LR3. My PC is almost stone-age and LR3 seems to run far smoother than LR2 does on my machine. I also love the watermark feature - if only they could add borders on export, LR2Mogrify would be obselete!

I have just been reading about it before I downloaded and it runs alongside and advises that you keep all your data well backed up as it is a beta version - runs until June

Not only does it not use your v2 database it can't use your v2 database.
I'd suggest avoiding importing the same photos into both databases too (especially if you save to a sidecar file)

Have I got this whole LR thing wrong then?
I thought LR was a library tool ( I know it does editing), so when I import, I am not importing the actual file, just an image of the file. The file stays where I put it on the hard drive.
If I delete my file from my catalogue it won't be permanently deleted unless I instruct it to.
So therefore if I import to both catalogues there should not be a problem.
Have I made sense or have I got it wrong.
If the Beta ends in June is that an indication of when the actual v3 will be released?

If you are writing changes to the sidecar file (or to the DNG if you have converted your images) you would be writing metadata/processing from both versions of Lightroom, which could cause corruption. If you aren't writing anything back to your files you should be fine to import to both and test as you please.
There is also the process versioning, where images processed in LR1/2 will need to be converted to be fully compatible with the new developmodule changes, but that is well documented on the Lightroom Blog.

The reason I suggested not having photos in both catalogues is that if you save (even accidentally) to sidecar files in LR3 it can affect your catalogue in LR2 - there's a chance that you could end up ruining processing that you've done to photos in LR2 by playing with the photos in LR3.

Actually the release notes say: "The Lightroom 3 beta 2 will expire after Lightroom 3.0 is available" which would seem to preclude a beta 3.

Anyone having problems installing this on a Mac.
The installation keeps failing during the "writing files" process.
I've tried installing as myself and as administrator. I've also tried installing to another disk. It seems to create the .app file but at 0kb.
I've had no problems installing any other software, and I currently run LR2 with LR3b1 no problems.:shrug:

The release notes say that when you install beta 2 it will overwrite beta 1 and continue to use the catalogue. So it should be seamless.
*I'm not at my Lightroom PC so haven't installed yet so can't vouch for it personally.

Noise reduction is just superb, and the new points based tone curve is a very welcome addition
