Hi,

Basic question that I need some help with...

I will shortly be getting some larger prints ordered following some requests from Family and Friends.

On the export feature of Lightroom 2, there is an option called Output Sharpening to sharpen the image for print (low, standard or high) for glossy or matte paper. I will be ordering prints on lustre paper; therefore whiich of these options should I choose in LR2?

Thanks,

Steve

According to Jeff Shewe , one of the developers of the output sharpening module there is only a small difference between the settings.

It would appear that during the testing phase there was a small disagreement as to whether the standard setting was a bit strong or a bit weak. So they made small adjustments either side to suit their own preferences. Bit like the Three Bears really!

To be honest I've used the standard setting on A3+ prints on a 2880 and they look fine.

Thanks for that Chappers, useful to know. :)

Now...if I want to use Lustre/Pearl paper for the finished print, does it make a difference whether I select Glossy or Matte in the LR2 Output Sharpening section?

According to Adobe the Media type is used to calculate the amount of sharpening applied to the print.

I've always selected the appropriate material type and had no complaints. If you are using Pearl/ Matte you should select the Matte option. However try on a small sample and see if you can see a difference

Also don't forget if you are going to print on canvas the sharpness of the print is going to be degraded by the canvas weave anyway

In answer to the OPs question, lustre is somewhere in between matte and glossy, I would run a test print off (or order a print on each paper of the same image, in a smaller size) to see which looks best.

I think there's quite a difference between low, standard & high but it's easy enough to compare:

I normally use Standard and pick the media type closest to the actual type.

Thanks pxl8, good example there. If you don't mind me asking, what size prints do you generally produce? Would standard be okay for 12" x 8" and 16" x 12"?

Average print size is 9x6" but I do a fair few at 18x12" as well and I use the same settings for those, set LR to output size in Inches @ 300dpi with sharpen on standard. For canvas prints or those that will generally be viewed from further away going to up to high might be worthwhile.

Thanks for the help and advice....:) I've now ordered a couple of 16x12's and a number of 12x8's and 9x6's.

Thanks for the advice all - I chose standard sharpening and glossy. Ordered the pics from DSCL using Fuji Pearl paper....arrived this morning, couldn't be happier.
