I'm thinking about having a walk up Low Fell at some point in the next few weeks. Where's the best place to park and start the walk from, Thackthwaite or Loweswater? Do the car parks get particularly busy? Ideally, I'd like to go up mid afternoon for the best of the light.

Thanks in advance.

Simon.

There is only limited road side parking at Thackthwaite. You might want to use Google Earth Street View to check it out. Having said that, it is the best place to start the climb.

Thanks, that's a help. Will check it out.

Hi Simon, I've only ever done it from Loweswater and its a bit deceptive, the route I took takes in Darling Fell top then drops down and back up again which you can't see from the road as it's hidden. The drop is a bit of a shocker when you see it!

From what I gather the thackthwaite route is a bit longer but gentler

Thanks Stuart :-)

Stuart is correct, the Thackthwaite route is longer by one tenth of a mile, but is gentler, as it uses the old coffin route. The ascent is approx. 1103ft (to the Southern Cairn). Depending where you park, the route via Darling Fell is slightly shorter, but involves another 150ft approx. of climbing.
P.S. The telephone box marked on the OS Map at Thackthwaite is no longer there. but there is a postbox.

Cheers Graham, that's really useful :-)
