Just wondering whether these make much difference? They're so much more expensive, so is it really worth it?

Maybe i'll have to go over to Screwfix and pick a few up then! :)

Price difference is amazing... £4.70 vs £0.16!!

If you're anywhere near Ikea, they sell low-energy bulbs very cheap. Every light in our house that I can fit a flourescent in to has one fitted. The only thing I don't like is that the colour temperature of the light isn't as relaxing as from a filament bulb, but this can normally be compensated for by the light fitting if it has a shade or glass to diffuse it a bit.

You can get low energy light bulbs for less than £2 each from toolstation.com

Every single lightbulb in my house is low energy.

I wouldn't bother with these in places you don't spend a lot of time, i.e. bathrooms, stairs, hallway etc. I'll tell you why.

They take a while to get warmed up (5+ mins). Until then they aren't exactly giving it 100%, shall we say. They start off fairly dim and get progressively brighter.

That said, apparently the 100W ones I have only use the equivalent of a standard 20W bulb, and they're brighter than regular bulbs too (eventually!).

Personally I prefer to just have the lamp on and/or a few candles. :)

They are excellent - ideal for use anywhere it's hard to get to the bulb to change it too as they last for ages!

Nearly every lamp in my house is low energy.

Look around for prices , Ikea, Netto both cheap but has your electric supplier not offered you 3 free ones, because ours did.

Tescos sell em cheap too. Some bulbs take a while to get to full brightness others don't.

All our are low energy type apart from the side light in the lounge.

The main lounge ones take a while to 'warm up' so you the side lights have normal bulbs in case we want to quick flick on :)
most take about about 1min to get to full on so not best in all circumstances but should save quite a few bob and the end of the day.

BTW B&Q had a promo on where they were a £1 each for the ES and BC types, check you local and see if they still have them.

Well worth usng anywhere that stay on for any length of time. Not all take so long to warm up but the other advantage is that they run much cooler as well as being 7 or 11watt. They are getting less bulky and a more elegant shape these days as the early ones ware ugly beasts in light fittings that show.

The advantage of energy saving bulbs is that because they take a while to warm up in the morning your sensitive sleepy eyes don't get assaulted by bright light :D

I went round the house and replaced all the bulbs I could with low energy items after I read how much more power my plasma screen used compared to the old 32" widescreen :)

A yin an yang thang :D

I got mine from wilkinsons, their own brand.......but the bulbs blurb sheet and branding on the cap is GE electric....less than a quid each for 20w (100watt equiv)

I quite like the way they warm up to, most of the time i'm flitting between rooms so they don't even have time to warm up....i'm living in a twilight world :)
