Loose Filter Adaptor??

I was given a Cokin P series filter holder and 3 ND grad filters a while back...I have just bought the various filter holder adaptors to fit my lens and tried them out yesterday..

The filter holder seems to be extremely loose on the adaptor meaning that it moves/swivals when the whole lot is mounted on the lens..The filters themselves are Hightech and seem a touch wide and are very stiff to slide in and out of the cokin filter holder...The upshot is that it practically impossible to make meaningful adjustments to the filter while holding the camera to the eye...

Are filters normally this finicky or do i need a different filter holder?

my cokin holder is quite a snug fit on the adaptor ring, maybe the holder you've been given has seen some action and got a bit worn.

I am beginning to think the same thing...Also it seems the Hightec filters are a fraction wider than the corrisponding cokin item which explains why they are tight...I think running the edges along a bit of wet n dry should cure it..I may look at another cokin filter holder as the hightec version in aluminium is over £50! :gag:

could the hightec filters be expanding the holder making it a slack fit?

try slimming the filter down to the correct size and retry it.
 
Use some fine grade sandpaper and take a bit off the filter edge to make it fit, assuming it's not glass of course.

A spot of araldite or similiar on the holder in the right place and left to harden properly would keep the adaptor ring in place better also.

Good idea about the araldite...

I've sanded the filters and they now fit properly; will get some araldite or similar tomorrow as the holder is still loose on the various adaptor rings i have...
