Yes
I like the Canon 550D but for a couple of things which is why I use the bridge camera.
The one pet hate is the shutter noise so I would want a camera with a silent 'electronic' shuter rather than a mechanical one.
It sounds like a gun going off in a quiet place compared to my FZ82.

The 550D has a decent size sensor 22.3x14.9 and 18megapixels which means I can shoot with a wider aperture.
However I find the bulk of the lens for a 70 to 600 zoom quite large compared to the FX82 (bridge).

Can anyone advise a camera to replace this with using a decent sensor and lighter lens (and silent operation) for around £1000.
Thats my budget at this point in time.
Thanks in advance

If you want a silent shutter IMO you must be looking at a Mirrorless body

IMO as I now use Olympus I would suggest this brand.

In regard to FL and FoV Olympus the sensor is 2x crop factor compared the full frame 35mm film (your 550D is a 1.6x crop factor). Therefore a 300mm FL on Olympus equals 600mm FL equivalent.

I have not checked secondhand prices but think your budget might stretch to:-
E-M1 mk2 body & Olympus 100-400mm zoom

PS if you want to see how good an image is possible with Olympus I suggest you have a look here

Member @the black fox IIRC used the combo I mentioned to very good effect.

as above, the sound your camera makes is mostly mirror not shutter. If you want quieter, the answer is mirrorless, if you want smaller lenses the answer is M4/3.

Unfortunately that also reduces the advantages of your 550d. Smaller sensor = more noise and greater DoF.

So, as I see it the choice is an M series, to keep your current lenses in a small cheap body, or even a new R50, or go M4/3 for the smaller lenses.

You don't say what you need for your £1000 though - just a camera or are you looking for an equivalent 600mm lens too? (very different questions)

I can only agree with the previous comments . As a user of both DSLR and M4/3 systems i need the 2 crop factor for obvious reasons . And yes the mirror sound of a DSLR is quite loud but there are no magical solutions as we all know .
The handling of my Olympus OM - D em1 is very good for the size of my hands , but the back side is a bit crowded with dials compared with a DSLR body . There are times i am a bit sceptic on how to training my nose in order to operate some functions .
I believe the most important for an amateur to consider is how to educate himself seeing the world around him , a second step to decide about what are the lenses ( focal lengths ) that expresses him the most and at the end to find a suitable camera body .
