Hi All,

I have a Registry coming up end of March and was wondering what essential lenses I should be equiped with? As it stands I have a 60mm Macro f/2.8 which I find is great for portraits. There are two photographers including my self (both of us have 400D's) so I'll be looking to hire lenses that would suit a 2 man crew. Bare in mind that I am only charging £350 for the job so not looking to get a whole load of lenses, maybe just 3 to do the trick. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I'd say you were probably looking at the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM as your 'walkabout' lens, or maybe even the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM.

You'll possibly need something a little longer for the candids, so perhaps the 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM could come in handy.

Hey thanks for your speedy response. Yea i'm glad you said the 24-70 as I had that one in mind. I was also thinking something wider like a 14mm f/2.8 L USM maybe beneficial at some point.

I think that depends on the venue itself. You might well find that the 14mm (effective 22.4mm on a crop sensor body) is too wide for successful use in a registry office.

Although if you're intending to hire a 14mm f/2.8 you might be tempted by the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM which gives you an effective 25.6-56mm on a crop body and allows a slight degree of flexibility over the 14mm prime.

I would suggest a 17-55 f2.8 IS and a 70-200L f2.8 IS would be all you really need.

105 is quite long on a crop body for a smallish office so the 24-105 might do for a long lens with a wider zoom like the 17-40 for the other guy

Hey this is great stuff, your all so very helpful. I'll have a chat with my mate with all your suggestions in mind. We may very well just go with the 24-70 and 70-200. Thank you V. Much!

Stick to the f2.8 apertures if you can. The 24-105 is an f4 and a very useful doorstop indoors. :)

I would not discount the 17-55 f2.8 IS on a crop body, will give you a wider option if you require it, okay it's not a L but almost as good as.

When thinking flash, remember that many offices/town halls have fancy/high ceilings that can affect bounced flash. If you have a diffuser take one.

Without knowing any more about the venue, or the scale of the event, or your preferred style of photography - all of which will affect your choice - I'd certainly agree with the first of these.

The full-frame shooters like the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L, but to my mind there's a real danger that 24mm isn't really going to be wide enough on a crop sensor when you're indoors. The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is just as good optically, and the combination of wide angle, fast aperture and IS means you can shoot in really low light without flash.

But whether or not you'll find a use for a 70-200mm depends critically on how you're approaching the event. Great for candid portraits if you've got enough space and that's your style. Perhaps not so great otherwise.
