Hi all,

I currently shoot on a Nikon d3300 and I'm looking to upgrade before I start a full time photography course in September. Ive narrowed it down to either a D610 (I would also buy a Trmaon 24-70 f2.8 G1 with this) or a D7500, although I'm open to other suggestions. Both of these would be bought second hand. The main factor that I'm currently debating is whether the newer censor in the D7500 would be enough to outweight the full frame quality of the D610? I already have a few other FX lenses, so the D610 wouldn't leave me with only a 24-70. My main shooting interests are photojournalism and portraiture.

Thank you for your time.

Joe.

Hmm, I would suggest starting/taking the photography course with your D3300 first. It sounds to me like you need to know more about what your specific needs are. With photojournalism there are times/subjects/situations where the crop sensor will provide greater benefits. And with portraiture where you are (should be) in control of the lighting there isn't really a huge benefit to a FF sensor.

The main benefits of FX are control of depth of field, lower noise at higher iso and rendering (not always obvious). DX will make PJ easier with greater dof due to shorter focal lengths used, at least up to a point. FX can give better subject separation in portrait shots for similar reasons, but low-light AF isn't good with the D610 if you may need that.

I'd agree with SK66.

A few other things to consider is that the d7500 has a noticeably wider AF coverage than the d610, the D610 can be a bit limiting at times and requires focus and recomposing. The D7500 only has one card slot vs two on the D610. Rare to get a corrupted card but it can happen and it would be a nightmare if you lost coursework because of it. The D7500 has a tilt screen which can come in very handy.

It’s a shame you can’t stretch to a D750, has a bit wider af coverage than the D610, tilt screen, dual card slots and FF.

If you haven't got too much invested in lenses go mirrorless. It's the future and IMO it has real advantages. In fact even if you have quite a bit of money invested in DSLR lenses I'd still go mirrorless and sell them off while there's still a market for them. The market for them may last but also it may not last as long as we'd think.

Other than that 24-70mm FF lenses IMO don't make a lot of sense on APS-C cameras, if you go for another APS-C.
