Hi all,

New to the forum so please go easy on me!

My wife has been interested in photography for a little while and the time has come to buy her a 'proper' camera and so I need some advice.

She will be using it for general use (people, pets, holiday, landscapes, etc) and so I ca't be specific on usage, but I guess something where you can swap the lenses for specific uses would be best (see what an expert I am! :))

My budget for the camera equipment is approx £500.

So, although I realise this is vague, can anybody give me any pointers to something that will best fit the bill?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum :)

This thread would be better going to the "talk equipment" forum, where I'm sure it'll get more views and replies.

Suggest clicking on the red triangle (bottom left) under your user name and asking the moderators if it can be moved to that part of the forum ;)

shifted :)

The important thing is not to surprise her with it.

She needs to go and handle a few bodies from all the manufacturers to see which is best for her.

So you'll need to take her out.

Once you have narrowed down the options we can assist a bit further however

tis

would seem to be good value.

I'd also factor in that once buying a camera and lenses, you'll be buying into a system, so check out what accessories are available for each brand, availability, cost etc.

Most top brands like Canon, Nikon have an large established range, although UK lens availability seem to be limited at present from both of the "big two".

Brands like Sony have made a big investment into the DSLR market and although they don't have the range of lens and accessories yet, they're gradually increasing their product range.

As Psi says, definately best to get your missus along to camera shops and handle a few bodies to see what feels best. Another factor is where the functions are located; lots of Canon's functions are located amongst the menu, whereas more are situated externally on Nikons, by the press of a button.

Hope this helps and once she has more of an idea we can then help further :)

Some very knowledgeable and helpful peeps on here :)
