Im looking for a zoom lens up to 400mm and will be used for sports, mainly bmx racing. Its to fit on a Nikon D2X and budget is £1000 has any one got any suggestions.

Also must be pretty quick at focusing.

cheers in advance

Hmm. The only affordable Nikon zoom which goes to 400mm is the 80-400VR. Whilst it has some virtues, quick autofocus certainly isn't one of them!

Is 300mm enough? The AF-S 70-300mm VR turns in a decent performance for its price, and it's w-a-a-a-y inside your budget.

Or if you can cope with a prime, the AF-S 300mm f/4 is great optically, and around £1000, and will take a 1.4x Teleconverter to get you to 400mm.

Other than that, you're looking for something from the likes of Sigma (eg 120-400mm OS), but I have no experience of them.

Does it need to be that long?

I can't imagine its much different to Motocross and with that a 70-200 is long enough (on a DX body) in 90% of the places. If its further way than that its prime time...

Looking at the prices on here, you could get a tidy second hand 70-200 VR for about the 1k mark. Fast focusing? Sure is!

The Sigma 120-400 is a good lens but f5.6 at 400mm, you have to decide if that is fast enough for you

Or you could get the Sigma 100-300mm f4 and use an 1.4TC whenever you need more reach

Another vote for the Sigma 120-400mm OS here. I have the Canon version and it's an excellent lens for the money.

As above look at Siggy 100-300f4 or if you can find one used the 120-300 f2.8 is a great lens and will take a TC whilst still giving a reasonable aperture. With sports if you can afford it go f2.8 - the seperation from the background with the depth of field is what gives images that pro feel.

If you want 400mm and dont want to spend a fortune you'll have to look at Nikon and sIGMA 80-400MM LENSES, BUT NEITHER HAS AN af MOTOR SO THEY ARE SCREW DRIVEN FROM THE BODY - ON SUCH LARGE LENSES THIS = REALLY SLOW af (whoops excuse accidental caps lock!)

300mm on a crop sensor is quite a lot... presumably you can get reasonably close at BMX meets any way so it should be enough and certainly will open up your lens choice a lot. If you get a fast 300mm you can always add a teleconvertor later if you need it.

PS if you were super rich this would be the dream lens: http://biSPAM/bJbEPP!!

*EDIT* Just noticed the Sigma 120-400mm does have the HSM AF motor so could well be a good option if you need 400mm... id get down to a good camera shop and test it for AF speed, etc.
