Hi

I am looking for a photographer, interested in shooting at my wedding. I am toying with the idea of either going fully professional with it, or using two amatuer/semi professional photographers.

A friend of mines husband is just starting out as a business and would like to shoot my wedding, but if I take this option I'd also like to have a second photographer (could also be just starting out). Think this means, two talents, two perspectives and obviously a great wealth of photos to choose from.

Is anyone interested?

May I suggest you say the date you are looking at?

Also, budgetary expectations might be helpful, i.e. are you looking for a cheap deal from people learning how to take photos or are you willing to pay for a professional.
 
Be prepared for an onslaught from the professionals....

Just think about if you would be happy if none of the pictures were up to standard. If you employ one professional then the chances are much greater that they will deliver a stunning set of images.

Also photographers are a bit like small children, two of them don't always play well together.

In some cases maybe but then you should know who you're working with! I frequently work with others and I quite enjoy the company :)

Not necessarily - a quality photographer can provide you with the wealth of images whether they've worked alone or with others.

Make sure you find someone who has a second who genuinely will add something - I use people as assistants with a camera, as far too many want to take the same photograph I am taking but from a different angle, and as I have the best spot for light, pose, backdrop etc, their image isn't going to be.

One of the noticable problems with images from second photographers is that the couple are looking away at something else, and never seem connected to the photographer, which, of course, they're not. I would think you want images that give a seamless result of the story of your day, which may be achievable with one or 2 photographers.

Anyway, dates etc will help and then you'll get the mass of photographers offering their help - I've got experienced, professional photographers I can put you in touch with based in your area if you are interested.

Apologies for the delay in repying, I've been a bit poorly.

Firstly, I do not necessarily want it cheap and free, just thinking of different approaches to the situation.

Secondly, the date I'm looking for is 24th September 2010 and approximately £500 ish depending on what is being offered for that. I do not have any idea about what is the normal wedding fee etc which is why I posted.

Nicola, £500 in wedding photography terms is cheap. The UK average is said to be approximately £1,250, but in reality it's more like £1,500.

Have a think about what you're wanting as final product, what will you be happy with. You will get someone who will shoot the wedding for £500, but as with anything you get what you pay for. And if you are still wanting there to be 2 photographers, don't forget that this will cost you as well, as both people need to be paid, even if they are a couple, as in husband and wife for example.

Anyway, hope you find someone in your budget, but do get a better idea of what you are wanting for such a small budget.

I'm free on the 24th September but I'm a bit above your budget. Also you've not mentioned what sort of package you may be after. Are you after a digital only package or an album as well? For your suggested budget I'm assuming digital only. One thing I always tell my prospective brides is that while I am happy to do digital only, I ask them to answer one question. What are you going to do with the files?

The answer quite often is stunned silence followed by a "Not sure". I always recommend an album, not because of my profits ( Although that is obviously part of running a business ), but because then you have something tangible that you can show friends and family, and also enjoy for the rest of your life. Digital formats change over time, a printed album will always be a visual story of the day.

As a hypothetical question to the OP... What would happen to the friendship if your Friend's husband totally messed up the photos? Could your friendship survive? Could the marriage survive (that's yours and/or your friends)?

Not having seen any of the work in question it's difficult to give any thoughts on the probabilities of him messing up, but it's worth thinking about the worst case just in case.

A couple of things to ask prospective togs to find out how serious they are in their business.

1) What's their experience of photography? It doesn't need to be a long list of recent weddings - although clearly helps), if they are new to wedding photography you also want to ask what have they done to prepare for it? There are a large number of courses out there that are designed for new togs to the business, doing one or more of these shows a level of professionalism.
2) What form of insurance cover do they have? Anyone remotely serious about being a wedding photographer recognises that no matter how many backup cameras and lenses they have, how many other togs they have on standby on case of illness etc. sometimes bad things happen and they can't deliver the goods; that's where professional indemnity insurance comes in!

Lastly 2 questions for yourself before you book the tog
1) do you like the togs work?
2) do you get on with the tog? remember it's a long day and they'll be with you for most of it!
